I am looking for some information on the children of Louis Gasnier
(dit Bellavance) and Louise Picard (m. Oct. 4, 1673 at St. Anne de
Beaupre). I know that Louis was the "Sieur de la Fresnaye", and the
title was passed on to his son, Alexis.
Since I am a descendant of Alexis, I would really like to have his
birthdate, place etc. I already have his marriage info:
Alexis Gasnier m. Catherine Cloutier at L'Islet (sp?) April 24, 1702
A souvenir/programme I have from a family reunion that my mom went to
in the 1950's mentions that Alexis had 5 siblings, but that he was the
eldest. Just names/dates of birth or baptism for these siblings would
be fine.
This programme has some very detailed information about the first two
generations of Gasnier's/Gagne's in Canada, but after that things get
a bit sketchy.
Thanks,

Hi Claire,
The Jette dictionary, page 448 lists 12 children for Louis Gagne and
Louise Picard. If you have no access to that dictionary, let me know and
I'll send you the information.
My husband is also a descendant of Louis GAGNE-BELLAVANCE & Louise
PICARD. His ancestor is Louis' son Pierre m.. Genevieve FOURNIER. I know
that Pierre was bap. on 6 Oct 1693 at Cap-St-Ignace, PQ Married on 10 Nov
1715 by Contrat Notaire-Abel Michon, and buried on 4 Feb 1775 T Berthier.
My husband's family eventually dropped the GAGNE and are now known as
BELLAVANCE.

I will start with the earliest generation I have for the GAGNE/GASNIER:
Louis GAGNE - b. bef. 1605 in St.-Cosme-de-Vair, Maine, France; died
there on Apr. 9, 1640; m. before 1610 same place to Marguertie LAUNAY.
Lived in St. Cosme in 1605 and in Ige in 1610; buried in church at St. Cosme.
Two of their sons were as follows:
Pierre bap. Jan 2. 1610 in Ige, Maine, France, m. Marguerite ROSEE abt.
1639 in France; buried in Quebec City on May 1, 1656. Name appeared in
New France as Pierre GAGNE dit GASNIER. Came to Canada about 1643 with
his spouse and son Jacques. Died of "fievres lentes" - slow fever.
Louis bap. Sept. 13, 1612 in St. Cosme; m. Marie MICHEL abt. 1638 in
France; died abt. 1662 in Quebec. Preferred surname was GASNIER.
Daughter of Louis and Marie was Louise GASNIER born abt. 1642; m. Claude
BOUCHARD dit LE PETIT on May 25, 1654 at Quebec City; buried Apr. 27,
1721 at Baie St. Paul, Quebec. Died at St. Francois-Xavier, Petite
Riviere, Quebec.
I have 4 BOUCHARD children listed: Antoine who married M. Madeleine SIMARD;
Rosalie who married Etienne SIMARD; Genevieve who married Michel
TREMBLAY; and Francois who married Marguerite SIMARD. All marriages were
at Baie St. Paul with dates as follows: Nov. 20, 1704; Nov. 22, 1695;
June 20, 1686; June 15, 1699.
Claude BOUCHARD's parents were Jacques and Nicole or Noelle TOUSCHARD or
BOUCHARD. Claude was a tailor according to 1681 census for Beaupre. His
marriage contract with Louise was before Notary Aubert on Nov. 30, 1653.
He was 40 on census of 1666, 45 on 1667 and 55 on 1681. (In those days
ordinary people did not keep calendars and remember birthdays as well as
we do today!)
My sources are Drouin, Jette, Tanguay and Eloi-Gerard. If you descend
from Louis GAGNE/GASNIER and Marie MICHEL you are cousins to my children
as these are their 9th great grandparents. My children's direct ancestor
is Louise's brother Louis who married Marie GAGNON on Feb. 9, 1678 at
Chateau Richer.
a bientot,
