I am researching the CHAPRONIERE family who are believed to have arrived in England from France around 1780 - 1800.
Does anyone know the region of France from which they came?
Geo.
Bonjour,
Geo.
My family has been researching the name for some years, and so far we
have had no luck finding the place of origin. As you already may know,
the full family name was Chevreuil de la Chapronière, and it is thought
that we might have looked after the King's horses — although this has
never been confirmed.
One of my French teachers strongly believed that we would have come from
northern France, from around the Île de Paris. She also made it plain
that 'Chapronière' would be the place name, ie that we would have been
the Chevreuils of Chapronière. This would make sense, as there is no
meaning for the word 'chapronière', an unusual characteristic for a
French surname.
My parents did come across the name in southern France (exactly where I
could not say), but it was on a signpost for a toilet stop!
It is correct that we came over in around the 1780s to escape the
Revolution; however, there was a family connection in both England and
France before
then. The story goes that my ancestral grandfather, at that time a Count
and a member of the lower aristocracy, rowed across the Channel with his
brother in a rowing boat to escape death. The main stem of the family is
believed to have stayed in Britain ever since, although there is a
chance that it went over to Australia in the 1800s when a family member
was found guilty of stealing a necklace. However, in the absence of
proof of this, I believe I am a direct descendant of the Count (ie I am
the
eldest son of the eldest son, etc).
If you do find any information on our roots in France, do let me know.
In the meantime, if you require further information, e-mail me and I
will contact my cousin, who has all the information so far found in this
country regarding the family. Be warned, though — there are a lot of
Chapronieres and there is a ton of information!
Good luck!
David Chaproniere
