Amelia Cote/Frederick Dufresne

I'm trying to locate the parents and/or ancestry of Amelia Cote. This is
the information I currently have:

b. January 23, 1863 in Canaan, NH
d. September 17, 1917 in Dover, NH
m. Frederick Dufresne in Tilton, NH
b. May 17, 1861 in Derby Line, VT
d. July 31, 1944
Children: (8) Celia, Frank, Julia, Eva, Theodore, Cham, Emma J. and Harry.

Amelia might have been of royal heritage and there could have been other
children.

I "think" her father was Joseph Cote who was born in Canada and married Mary
Richards of the northern part of New Hampshire. They lived in Canaan, NH
after marriage.

The family "tale" goes that there were 3 Dufresne brothers who went to
Canada with Lafayette from France to fight in the war. The "tale" also says
one of these Dufresne brothers married an Indian Princess. Great stories,
but have no basis to prove or disprove either theory.

Does anyone know of either of these families?

I could be very wrong, but I don't think Le Marquis de Lafayette ever went
to Canada to fight a war. He did go to the fledgling United States of
America, however, to fight a war.

I have a g-g grandfather, Joseph Houle, a "wood-cutter from P.Q. who
also had children in Canaan, NH at about the same time, 1860. There was
no RC church there at that time, apparantly only itinerant missionary
priests. Baptismal records can't be located and they didn't register
their children's births with the civil authority in Canaan ( I checked).
It seems that in Québec, the parish priests took care of registering the
births after the baptisms were done. In New Hampshire and elsewhere in
New England, the priests might have been Irish and the people they
served non-English speaking. Hence, the priests assumed the parents
would register the births and the parents asssumed the priest would take
care of things like back home. Hence, I have found that it is very
difficult to trace the parents in this "twilight zone" between 1860 and
1880, as records are very difficult to find.

If anyone can help you, let me know, as I have a big gaping hole in
tracing back this part of my family - the Houles.

And of course, let's not forget that they might have had a "dit" name
that they forgot to tell their children about.

My great grandmother is the Amelia you mentioned and her daughter Celia is my grandmother. We have little Cote family info, but I only discovered today that Amelia lived here in my own town of Canterbury NH as a child and walked 5 miles each way at 9 years of age to work in the Belmont Mill where she lost a finger. Amelia did marry Frederick Dufresne, eventually ending up in Farmington, NH where I believe he worked in a shoe factory and farmed. They were extremely poor. One of their children, Frank Dufresne went on to become a noted author and the first Game Commissioner of Alaska. One of his many writings was No Room for Bears; he wrote for Field and Stream as well. I was too young to have ever met him.
My sister has been collecting further information, but did say that Amelia as well as other Dufresnes are buried in Farmington.
We hear the Indian Princess story as well - supposedly someone by the name of Frechette is the one who married the indian, not a Cote. Frechette did fight in the French and Indian War.
Family lore also has it that at one time, I think it's Amelia's father, (my sister will have to correct me) lived in Derby Line, VT. There was a Derby Line in CA as well to where it was convenient to go when the draft called.
