I have seen references to Catherine Quevillon (daughter
of Adrien and Jeanne Hunault=Deschamps) having an child
by an Iroquois while in captivity. His name Van
Tekakwitha and the child's nameVan Katerine Tekakwitha.
Can anyone give me a source for confirmation of this
please. She went on to marry four times after this:
lacombe=St. Amant; Samuel Papineau; Jacques Daniel, and
Jean-Baptiste DeVerac.
Also, does anyone know of the heritage of (St.) Kateri
- awaiting sainthood by the Catholic Church? Is there
any connection to Catherine Quevillon?
Any help appreciated,

The Future is as Great as the Promises of God
KatheriTekakwitha, born in Upper State New York, in 1656, died
at the mission St-François-Xavier du Sault St-Louis on April 17, 1680. Soon
after, people living in the neighboring parishes began to think of her as a
saint and ask for her blessings in numerous ways. In the late 1690, Pierre
Rémy, parish priest of Lachine wrote a letter testifying about some of the
"miracles" obtained by his Lachine parishionners who had prayed Kateri,
some as early as 1686. The Lachine people and their priest were not the only
one to pray the blessed Kateri.
Considering Catherine Quevillon, born in 1686 and married in 1703 - that was
the right time frame for her to be captured in one of the many iroquois
raids that followed the Lachine massacre (1689) and lasted up to four or
five years afterward. If so, she was probably freed during the 1700/1701
negociations that preceded the Great Peace of Montreal, in 1701. Time enough
for a child of her to be born in the late 1690's.
Given the rising reputation of KatheriTekakwitha (who, by the way was
baptised under the christian name of Catherine), it would be quite
understandable for a mother already named Catherine to give a
Kateri/Catherine name to a child born in captivity - even more so if, like
so many did - she linked her freedom to a "miracle". The connection between
Quevillon and Tekakwitha, if any, would then be of a spiritual, not a
material nature. A rather farfetched explanation to a XXth century mind, but
not at all unlikely in the mentality of the time. Mind you, this is all
conjectural, at this point, and no more than an educated hypothesis.
Now, there is another point to be considered. There was a lot of resentment
among the Iroquois for those who had "forsaken" their tribe by becoming
Christians and moving away from their villages to live in the Jesuit mission
of Sault Saint-Louis. Calumnies and tales of wrong doing were circulated
against Kateri, even during her lifetime. Given the strong anti-papist
attitude prevalent among some of the New York allied of the Iroquois, the
references to a possible connection (full of inuendos) between Quevillon and
Tekakwitha could possibly come from such a source.
I'd like to hear more on the subject

NO. "6", Catherine QUEVILLON was born in early 1686 (baptized 4 MAR
1686).
She married first on 30 JUL 1703 to Guillaume LaCOMBE who was from La
Cote
Saint Michael where he had built a little house for him & his young
bride. He seems
to have died shortly after their marriage without issue & on 16 JUN
1704, she
remarried to Samuel PAPINEAU who was the forefather of the PAPINEAU
family of
Canada & the US. He was born in Montigny in Piotou, France, not far from
Bordeaux
in 1670. He was the son of Samuel PAPINEAU, Sr. & Mary DELAIR, who were
originally from Papiniere, France. Samuel was given the title of "De
Montigny" in his
early manhood before he came to Canada, throughout the rest of his life.
Nine children were born to Catherine in her 2nd union; 3 daughters & 6
sons. Samuel,
her 2nd husband, died in April of 1737 & was buried i Sault-au-Recollet,
Canada on
April 23, 1737.
Catherine was the 6th child in the family of Adrien QUEVILLON & Jeanne
HUNAULT & seemed to have followed the example of her mother by marrying
4
times. After her first 2 marriages, above, she remarried a 3rd time to
Jacques
DANIEL, widower of Madeline BARBEAU on 3 APR 1742 when she was 56 years
old. Her 4th & last union was with Jean Baptiste DE VERAC, called also
"The
Parisian" who was an upholsterer from Paris. They were married in
Sault-au-Recollet
on 18 FEB 1754 in her 68th year. The last 2 unions were naturally,
without issue.
She was captured & carried away by the Iroquois Indians during the
massacre of La
Chenaie in 1693 where she remained a captive until the late part of 1700
at which
time she was brought back to her people by a gallant young Iroquois
warrior who had
been her protector & suitor throughout her captivity. It was because of
his gallantry
& pleading that her life was spared & certainly that was enough to gain
her favors.
She mothered a daughter for him during the early part of 1700 & as soon
as it became
known to them that a treaty between England & France was signed, he had
taken her
& the baby back to her people at La-Pointe-au-Trembles. The little
girl's name was
Van Katherine Tekakwitha...Van, after him, Katherine after her &
Tekakwitha for
his family's name. Little Van Katherine grew up well versed with the
doctrine of her
mother's church & as she rose to young womanhood she chose to dedicate
her life to
the service of God by serving in missionary work with the Iroquois of
the village of
Caughnawaga in Southern Quebec.
Catherine had witnessed at the time of her capture, the assassination of
her sister,
Francoise Angerlique who was then in her 12th year. Angelique was burned
at the
stake, alive, before her mother & sister's eyes & they were made to eat
of her
charred flesh. She also was forced to witness the rape & adultery
imposed upon her
mother by the chiefs of the group. In spite of all the turmoil & fierce
ordeals she had
experienced, she lived a full life & died at a very old age, 95, on 30
MAR 1781 & was
buried on 2 AUG 1781--4 months & a few days after her death in Notre
Dame de
Montreal by Pere HADRY. ( Records of Notre Da of Montreal)...by Iva
Septem
COUVILLONS, 1966.
I am not an ancestor of Samuel and Catherine (probably a cousin), but I keep
all this information on my website for other Papineau's who find my site.
My ancestor Jean Testard de Folleville dit Papineau was actually here about
1 generation before Samuel.
At the end of your email, I see your surname is Lamarche. This rang some
bells for me. I checked my database (www.papineaufamily.com/familytree.htm)
and found that my 10th great grandparents were
Louis La Marque (born 1623) and Marie Papineau (born 1627) from Ste-Colombe,
diocése de Bordeaux, Guyenne, France.
They had two children
Jacques La Marque (born March 12, 1643, Bordeaux, Guyenne, France)
Anne La Marque (born July 07, 1648, St-Andre, Bordeaux, Guyenne, France)
Anne La Marque Married my 9th great grandfather Charles Testard (born 1640,
Rouen, Normandie (Seine-Maritime))
Does any of this ring any bells with you.

You said that you were "quite familiar with the notorious Anne Lamarque".
She is my 9th Great Grandmother and I don't know much about her.
What I have, I found in "Dictionnaire National des Canadiens Francais" pages
1070 and 1275 which basically lists her parents, husband and children.
Could I persuade you to share your information and sources with me. I would
greatly appreciate any help you might be able to provide.
