Most Barrus in the U.S. came from a John Barrowe or Barrows who came
here in 1630's. I believe my name does not originate from this individual,
but was anglicized to match existing spellings. My strongest suspicions are
that the name is either Spanish or French, possibly from Carribean descent,
originally spelled Barros, Barross, Barras, Barrass, etc. Unfortunately, I
have been unable to trace this family any further back than 1812 in
Massachusetts, USA.

I have seen the name Burrus here in the U.S. It is usually a
corruption of Burrows, most likely of English origins. If your family comes
from France, then I would suspect that your spelling might be right on, or
possibly Burras. It might be a corruption of Barras, which is a common
enough name in France.
