The intended use of this software is that a copy be included on the CD
that my family association distributes. I've found that many of the
family cousins buy the CD for the family information it provides, but
don't have the technical computer knowledge to get everything that is
available on the CD. So I'm looking at a simple way to allow people to
"browse" through the family lines without having to use a real
genealogy program.
My thought is that Gary didn't actually "program" all that went into
GEDX 2.02.11d, particularly the chart generating capabilites that are
missing in earlier versions of GEDX. Rather I think he simply added
some charting package(s)... so my guess is that there is other
software "out there" with similar capabilities... at least I hope so.

I haven't tried it, but if you don't mind a Windows-only item,
you might get the PhpGedView CD version. Supposedly it is
self-contained, having Apache, PHP, MySQL, and PhpGedView in
the image. If you can mount the image, add your GEDCOM, and
make a new image, .....

PhpGedView runs quite well under OS's other than Windows.
I think Wes missed the OP saying he's running Linux. I haven't
looked at the CD version of phpGedView he mentions, but I wouldn't
be surprised if there were not something like that exclusively for
Gates' Universal Computer Virus. That notwithstanding, I would
rank my recommendations as (1) Gramps, (2) pGV+apache+php+MySQL,
(3) genj, (4) lifelines + gdbi-ll. Gramps because it's an easy
install using rpm, pGV because it's a damned nice program and
getting nicer as John Finley and crew refine it, the latter two
because they're interesting. I like FTree but wouldn't recommend
it because it appears to me to be at end of life or near it and
it really doesn't have a good reporting structure.

Hmm, Either your newsreader is screwing up the messages, or you're
replying to the wrong thread.
I mentioned GEDX (GEDCOM Explorer) in my original post in this thread,
and it's a Windows program, now almost useless because of the sudden
death of it's developer, Gary Bonham. I mentioned Linux in another
thread where another OP was asking for a genealogy program that runs
under Linux. Perhaps you got the two threads crosslinked?
I do appreciate the comments about pGV... I'll be looking into that.

Wes,
Thatks for that suggestion. I've searched, but can't find any link to
a CD. Is it available somewhere as an image to download, or do you
have information on where I can order it if it's only available via
order?
Charlie:
You're absolutely right - wrong thread. You might want to look on
http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net/ for more information about what's
available for the windows environment. Either pGV or The Next
Generation (TNG) might serve your purpose, dunno; seems an awful
overkill for what you've described you want. Still, if Wes is
correct about the pGV CD, with all the necessary pieces, it might
not be too bad.

Another contender is Dynamic Family Tree (Dftg). Have a look at my
website http://www.wonk.demon.co.uk/ under genealogy.
Can't remember their URL; try Google.

But the no-install run-from-CD version doesn't. (I think)

What the OP is running (I assumed) is irrelevant because he's
looking for something he can include on a CD to send to non-geeky
relatives. (Even the version I mentioned might be a little
too geeky for some folks)

Look for Windows Demo (the name confirms my suspicion
regarding O.S.)
If you're _really_ brave, you could probably fiddle with
the PHP to make some functions unavailable, and remove them
from the menus, thereby simplifying the package.

Take a look at Mudcreek Software GENviewer.
http://www.mudcreeksoftware.com/index.htm There is also a free lite version
and a free CD-Rom version.
Kevin
CH:
Try http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=55456 and
scroll down to pane 1 - under PhpGedView v4.1.1
The first entry...
The demo can be run from your hard drive or a CD. Nothing to install.
As noted by others, PGV is nice, but maybe a bit tough for non-computer
people. But judge that for yourself.

My thanks for this as well as all the other suggestions. I looked at a
lot of software over the last couple of days, but I decided on
GenViewer by Mudcreek software. Although they offer a special free
version designed for installing on a CD, as well as a free "lite"
version, I opted to get the full version (only $20) which includes a
neat feature of being able to create a GEDCOM self-viewer that may be
freely distributed. With this feature, I can put an executable on our
family CD that will automatically install and run a viewer for
whatever GEDCOM I select. This gives the user the ability to view the
data in a variety of ways, including traditional pedigree charts
(which the free GENVIEWER lite does not include). All in all, it
provides everything I asked for.... so I really appreciate all the
help.

Since you are selling the CD you will have little luck to legally
distribute any software. You willhave to by a distribution license.
Ahah! See my earlier post. I found a package that allows
distribution.... just what we need!
