I am an experienced computer professional with no genealogy experience.
Some family members have asked me to computerize their photo album and
family
tree research and place the results on CDs that can be mailed around to all
family members (They are older and have done all their work by hand without
a computer). I would be working on a PC and already am familiar with
Photoshop and scanning photos technology.

---What software is best for making/displaying CD picture albums?
(Pictures with descritive captions and perhaps links to a family tree)

---What software is best for making/displaying digital family trees on a CD?

---Is there one software that does both in a nicely integrated user-friendly
manner?

---While we can buy the software for creation purposes, we don't want to buy
multiple copies of the software for everyone who receives the CD just so
they can view our album/tree creation. An inexpensive on-CD player-only /
access-only function would be important. Is there such a thing?

--- I and most of the family owns PCs but I'm sure somebody in the family,
who would be receiving the CDs, would have a Mac. Is there software/a way to
create
the CDs for cross platform access (PC and Macs) ?

--- We would want to create this in a method and with a software that is
most likely to remain in use the longest. We don't want to go to all of
this effort and then find our CDs can't be accessed in 5 plus years because
the software company/companies went out of business and the software no
longer is usable/update-able.

Would greatly appreciate anyone's input on these various issues ... Thank
you

Use HTML. And be prepared to migrate the data every couple years
anyway.

Virtually all the questions that you have posed are shown and discussed by
one of my acquaintances who has a web page at:

http://www.bliley.net/family/Lula_Bliley/Album/Home.htm

It discusses cross platform creation and software, packaging, production,
and best of all the creator is a nice guy who answers his email.

Enjoy!

Try FlipAlbum you can download a trial version at: http://www.flipalbum.com

It won't do everything you want but you can annotate pictures and make a CD
that can be played without owning the software. You probably will find there
is no one program that will do everything but this one is nice for Photo
Albums. You can even add music to it. It will automatically generate and
table of contents and an index and you can go directly to the page you wish.

It won't cost anything but your time to try it out.

I've used Jasc's Media Center Plus for this and had very good luck
with it. I did find it was helpful to have my files named in a
logical manner when using this software. I recently did a project
with 348 images of scanned photos and was very pleased with the end
result. It creates the output in HTML format and has some 'canned'
styles of output. I actually created two different sets of output
each with it's own style. Since I had both outputs reference the same
image files, I could tie the two together with an index.html file.
Thus, you can view the same files in different styles.

I think a lot of people would like to find the definitive answer to
this one! I'm convinced the best format is HTML, the problem is how
to get it in that format.

Here's a couple of programs that I like:

Dynamic Family Tree Compiler
It's a free program that imports GEDCOM files and is very good. My
only wish is that it would add one additional field of info that it
displays and that is the marriage ending status. (i.e. - for
divorces) It generates only a few relatively small files for the
output since it's a Java applet for the output. The drawback to this
is if you wanted to manually edit some of the pages. However, I must
say that the program is brilliant as it is.

GedHTree
It's not free, but has a demo mode. It's pretty good but takes some
getting used to initially. The output is in HTML format and it too
uses a GEDCOM file for it's source. It has a variety of HTML output
that it generates with various options to choose. The drawback to
this program is that it creates a large number of files and takes
awhile to generate the output, however, if you wanted, you could then
load these into a web editor and make changes if you desire. (It also
does not include marriage ending status for divorces.)

Would love to find it if it's out there!

I'd go with HTML output. No need to distribute the program that
creates the output and since HTML is the web standard, anyone "should"
be able to read it.

HTML would be best. I suppose PDF might be an option, but I've not
played with this as I don't own Adobe Acrobat.

One can never predict the future in the computer world. (You already
know that.) Even with HTML output, will the HTML standards of today
work 5 years from now?

Regardless, I'd love to find even better programs to accomplish what
you're doing. Thus, if you or anyone else finds a better way, please
post that information!

Ancestral Quest www.ancquest.com is a fully featured family history
package which, amongst other things, allows you to attach photos to
individuals. These photos can be viewed in a variety of ways including a
scrapbook or slide show from within the package. The software costs about
$40US.

The website allows free download of a demo version and contains instructions
of how to produce & distribute CDs containing both the demo together with
the files produced by the fully licensed version.

I take it HTML because HTML is the most universal and can be used on a
website also ...?
Migration because the both the media and the software get's outmoded?
