My files have become bloated as a result of relatives requesting that I
add on their inlaws and children, and even the names of children by their
new husbands previous wife etc.
( This was great when I was starting. Wow ! 20 names !)
Now I want to delete them and only have people that have some blood
connection with me.Yes, marriage partners of blood relatives will be the
exception. How can I do this apart from going through my index name by name?
I have FTM 7 but can upgrade if needs be.

Any ideas would be much appreciated

Been here, tried to do that, said Fergitabhtit. Without going
name by name I found no way to exclude non-relatives without
losing spouses.

As a painful workaround, in PAF 4, I printed off a DIRECT
Descendants list for the most distant ancestor -- with INDEX! I
then went through the database and added spouse names to the
index. *THEN* I went into the individual, alpha search, and
deleted everyone not in the index. 'Course, I ended up missing
the wife who had kids, so had to add back that line, and I
misplaced a couple kids who for reasons known but to the Almighty
chose to adopt non-standard names, but it could have been worse.

[Non-standard: Pacific Sunrise strikes me as a non-standard name
for a WASP born in Kansas.]

No help, but lots of sympathy.

Cheryl , I am a very optimistic person, always hoping for an easy way out,
but it looks like there's some drudgery ahead for me. Thanks.

You can do a certain amount of mass deletion if you're careful.
Go to the 'most ancient' unwanted person (or husband & wife) in the branch
you want to remove.
Go to Outline Descendant Tree & fiddle with the 1/2/3 box on the right until
you get the maximum people you want to delete, but make sure no-one from the
tree you want to keep appears there.
Go to People - Delete Individuals in Outline Descendant Tree.
It may be a good idea to copy your original .ftw to the desktop first in
case you blow it.

You usually finish up with a few unlinked individuals, but they are easy to
pick up in All-In-One view.
Also. quite a few will show up under Data Errors as having 'no parents'

Thanks John,
Thats good info. I think what I'll do is copy the program and files and load
them onto my #2 PC and experiment there, to be darn sure. I merged two
family files a couple of years ago and still wake up with nightmares about
the mess that I had to clean up.
Cheers.

No need to.
ALL data is stored in the "FTW Family File", so if you stuff up, just delete
the modified one and paste the copy of your original back.
FWIW, I added another folder to FTM which I called Databases & moved all my
"FTW Family Files" there - rather than have them sitting in the main folder,
so even if I uninstall FTM for any reason, or it corrupts, my data remains.
Then if I re-install FTM, I'm up & running straight away.

I have a database in a similar situation (but no desire to purge as you do). I
find it beneficial to have these other people, because there have been times
where I have found multiple connections (i.e. their relatives marrying in
somewhere else in the tree or that they themselves turn out to be cousins!).

If you can't purge them, here's a thought: You could periodically resequence
your database so as to place all your blood relatives at the lower numbered
entries. That's what I do. The internal numbers are arbitrary anyway....

I don't use FTM, but in BKv6, one can use the "split database" function,
eventually selecting the entire database to copy, and the order in which the
people were selected determines the order they will get into the new database,
and thus has a bearing on the internal number they are subsequently assigned.
If you or they trace back to any "low population" areas such as Colonial
America before 1650, or geographically isolated areas such as islands or in
mountain ranges, you might want to reconsider - in those areas, every family
seems related to every other somehow after about 5 generations.

I don't have FTM, so I can't help with that. This may therefore be a "You
can't get there from here" message.

But in my 1993 model genealogy program, Family History System (FHS) it's dead
easy.

I just ask it to select all the relatives of any person in the file.

Then add spouses and parents of spouses.

Then export that as a GEDCOM and import it into a new file.

That's actually what I do when I send family data to relatives. If they're in
my files, I select them, and get all their relatives automatically, and send
them the GEDCOM. Takes about 2-3 minutes.

But I can't tell you how to do it in FTM. It may (ought to) have such a
funxtion, but you'll need to look for it, or ask an experienced user.

The best idea is to switch to Legacy. Get the free version off the web.

Export you FTW file to a Gedcom and import that into Legacy.

Then export that (either to Legacy or Gedcom), and a screen will come
up asking who you want to export. Go to "focus group" and clear
everything out. Then select yourself and ancestors with spouses and
add that to the list, then add yourself and descendents with spouses to
the list. Then export.

Legacy is a vastly superior program to FTW, if for no other reason
than this feature. You can always export to Gedcom and inport into FTW
to use the fancy tree drawer stuff that is not in Legacy. That's what
I do with my own stuff.

Unfortunately I don't think an FTM update will be of much use in that
respect:-( I also have dozens of non-related people in my database but
made a decision a long time ago to keep them all on file. The size of
the file is not important to me at all, but managing and manipulating
and being able to make selective reports/gedcoms as required from it is.
FTM has failed me many times in this, but all my data is locked into an
FTM file, which I treat as the "master database". All that's required
is to be able to easily export it into another genealogy program that
can deal better with reports as and when required.

This sounds like a really useful facility. I've been searching for ages
to find some software that will allow a simple "person plus all their
cousins" etc. type of report/tree, so I'm about to download a copy of
FHS from http://fhs.tallahassee.net/ and try it out (I presume this is
the same software you are using Steve?)

AFAIK FTM(9) will not do this (or perform many other basic, logical
functions that genealogists must want to do all the time)!

However, in my experience of FTM, exporting the data in a gedcom format
that FHS will easily accept is likely to be a major problem! I will
report back if it works.

Can you, in PAF's advanced search, select "all related"? I wonder
if that's the group of people you'd want to keep. If so, try this:
(assumes downloading PAF...)

1. Import your gedcom into PAF
2. Go into advanced search
3. Select all related to, say, you.
4. Export a gedcom from the selected folks (they're selected, so the
list will stay intact for the export)

What do you think of my suggestion, Cheryl? Is it what they're
asking for, I think?

You know that sound a clean drain makes? (BG) "All related"
seems to be a data-dump/core-dump. :(

What he wants is a perfectly reasonable thing TO want, and
why PAF won't give it appears to be related to the
soi-disant improvements of a GUI-based app over a DOS-based
one.

Urm, well, yes, it WILL, but all I could smell was the Lysol.

Oh, well, I needed a bigger monitor anyway?

Thanks to all ! Lots of good possibilities. I will print this thread and
work on the tidying up next week.

Chris
