Grift is an old word for canal, so Jacob or his ancestors could live
anywhere where was a canal.

'de Grift' is not a canal but a small river or brook, indeed running
through Apeldoorn. Don't confuse this with 'het Apeldoorns Kanaal',
a canal (manmade for shipping with locks) running from Dieren to
Apeldoorn and then to Hattem. I believe 'de Grift' has a manmade
underpath ('duiker') under the Apeldoorns kanaal.
The local name of a brook on the Veluwe (Apeldoorn is 'on' the Veluwe)
is 'spreng', cf English 'spring'.
Sorry, I cannot comment on the genealogical questions.
