Can anyone suggest how I might find out about the life and
career of Henry Charles Matthew and in particular his first
wife, Elizabeth Jane Penelope Sutor?

Henry Charles Matthew was born in Aberdeen on 13 November 1871,
son of Alexander Matthew and Mary Johnston. He married Elizabeth
Jane Penelope Sutor, who was 22 years his senior, in Edinburgh
in 1900, and his marriage certificate describes him as a
minister of the Free Church. After that I have found no trace of
him, except in an online genealogy which says that he married
Annie Munro Balfour and died in 1951. Annie Munro Balfour was
born in Melbourne in 1877.

TIA

Anne

Hi

from the Victorian death indexes 1920-1985, Henry Charles Matthew died
in Victoria in 1953, his address was indicated as being in Balwyn, his
age was given as 83 years, and his parents were - Alexander Matthew and
Mary Johnston, the registration number for the death was - 3400. By the
way - Balwyn was a fitting location for a christian minister- a well to
do suburb (maybe strongly anglican?) a short distance east of the
centre of Melbourne - Balwyn was and possibly still is considered an
extremely conservative suburb -

Annie Munro Matthew, father:James Balfour, mother:Francis (sic)
Charlotte Henty ( by the way - Henty is a prominent early name in
Victorian history - google search for the Henty brothers ..) died in
Balwyn aged 73 years in 1951 registration number- 616. So quite
probably since he outlived his wife - Henry was the informant of the
information supplied on Annie's death certificate and there is a good
chance that the info may be failry accurate.

I had a look at some of the indexes and couldn't find any children born
to the couple .. they could be there - I just missed them...

Checking the electoral rolls - there seems to be no mention of a Henry
Charles Matthew until 1906 - when the family appear on the rolls in
Western Australia -

Henry Charles Matthew. minister and Elizabeth P McPh Matthew are at
Thompson rd, Claremont ( a suburb of Perth)

the 1914 electoral roll shows that henry, clergyman, and Elizabeth
Penelope McPherson Matthew are living at St.Matthews (church?) Stawell -
a western district town of Victoria.
the 1936 roll shows Henry, clergyman, along with Annie, at 2 Campbell
rd, Camberwell North Victoria ( a suburb next door to Balwyn).

So it looks as though the family moved to Australia sometime before 1906
and settled briefly in western australia - possibly where any children
may have been born? - and then the family were moved sometime prior to
1914 to victoria where henry administered to congragations in Stawel and
later in Balwyn? I'd say there is probably plenty of info about Henry -
just waiting for a researcher?

google and you'll find a site that has Western australian births deaths
and marriages (I'm not going to do everything) - not fantastic - but
Claremont may help?

I suggest you get hold of the Victorian death cert for Annie - could be
very useful locating children?? and the date of death for henry from his
death cert would help locate newspaper obits -

good luck

Robert

Hi Anne

She was the 10th of 11 kids born to Jas and Frances Charlotte Henty
BALFOUR
In the 1903 VIC electoral roll , James is listed as a merchant and
they lived at Studley Park Road, Kew , an upmarket part of Melbourne !

Indexes to VIC BDMs have been on line for quite a while

http://tinyurl.com/jdvh2

There is a small access charge . You can download copy of any doc for
just A$17.50
Birth indexes published on fiche and CD to 1920 ages ago . A while
back to Registry got all up tight about privacy and now the on line
births are only to 1907. The same silly business applies in NSW too

When posting on a foreign mailing list its not a bad move to give
clue as to you location

Bye

Hi -

I forgot to add the important detail - the first wife -

from the death indexes:
Elizabeth Penelope McPherson Matthew nee Sutor died in Flemington,
Victoria in 1924 aged approx 75 years registration number: 9808,
father:James SUTOR, mother Elizabeth MANTACH

The 1924 electoral roll indicates that Elizabeth and Henry, presbyterian
minister, were living at Wellington street, Newmarket - an old suburb of
Melbourne next door to Flemington -

So if Elizabeth was Henry's wife - and she died in 1924 aged about 75
years of age - then she was born about about 1849 and she was 22 years
older than him - most unusual - I wonder what the story was? She was 51
years old when she married a man still in his 20s?? No wonder I didn't
find any indication of children born to the couple??
And when Henry married for a second time he married Annie Balfour - a
lass 6 years younger than him - but she was still very close to 50 years
of age - probably no issue from the union?

So we're researching Henry out of interest rather than any direct
ancestor connection?

Perhaps SKS could supply the date of the marriage of Henry to annie -
after 1924 - and before 1936.

good luck

Robert

As usual Ken Gibb gives a reply just like Don Moody.... full of crap,
berating the poster and about as helpful as a cup of cold water
Why dont you give up Ken, take a cold shower and disconnect from newsgroups.
Three other people replied with a great lot of information for Anne and
didnt berate her at all
You could learn from their replies

A Balfour genealogy which says that he married Annie Munro
Balfour.

You are wrong. Some of it did rejoin the Church of Scotland but
there is still a Free Church of Scotland. Get your facts right
before shouting about them. It has a web site
http://www.freechurch.org/ and before you ask, yes, I have
contacted them.

Don't be sarcastic.

When I posted my message I did not know that.

If I had known the answers to all these questions I would not
have posted the original message. I told you everything I knew
about Henry Charles Matthew, and I attempted to make it clear
that I am interested in him and in his FIRST wife.

Ken, I have seen many rude and unhelpful replies to queries in
the 25 years I have been researching, but yours takes the
biscuit. Fortunately there are others on the list who have been
kind enough to help me, and I now have answers to some of my
questions, and additional information about Annie Munro Balfour.

If that is a fair sample of the sort of response you give to new
posters I suggest that you go and boil your head.

Many thanks, Robert and MargM, for all the helpful information,
which has filled in a lot of the gaps for me. I really
appreciate your kindness.

If I can look anything up in Morayshire or Banffshire in
Scotland for anyone (except Ken Gibb of course <g>) please let
me know.

Best wishes

Anne

Brilliant, thank you, Robert.

I always try to collect BMD and any other information about
spouses of blood relatives, so yes, you are helping me to
research a genuine relative, though not an actual direct
ancestor.

Best wishes

Anne

I am not blaming you, Anne. Plainly you have told all that you know.
Genealogy is different from computers, and the standard info recommended
there is always available to the poster in the Linux group, whereas it
often isn't with genealogy. I think that Ken is trying to enforce
something of the kind, but it certainly saves him from doing any lookups.
What has happened, Ken? You were very helpful to me a few years back.

Doug,
Oddly enough am still helpfull to those who give sufficient detail --
originally.
I do not have loads of CD s ( as some have) so I can only assist where
I know the information may be.
That is how one gains knowledge of where to look, but some want it on
a plate.

I was first to respond as you may notice.
S you can see by my original response the requester DID come forth
with more information later.
Attitude also was to me negative & vindictive.
So be it.
Try me with a question as a test case please.
Sorry to bottom post as I would have top posted ( in this case)
but the heavies would have come down again
Ken
