Online family trees

What are some recommendations for online publishing of family trees?

Essentially, I want a site where I can share the information with
globally scattered immediate family members, so I'd like individual
passwording and a facility for admin only rights, and the usual privacy
protections for living people. I'd also like attractive assembling of
the information, which would also show my notes and sources.

It would be useful to make it possible for more distant relatives to
find the information and make contact, so some sort of searching open to
the larger world would be useful, but I definitely *don't* want
something like MyHeritage with its useless 'matches' system and the need
to pay for any functionality beyond the very basic. In fact I want a
free site. I could sort of re-invent the wheel and design something
myself, but there must be an easier way.

After looking around, I wonder what people think of Tribal Pages; that
seems to be the sort of thing I want. It appears USA-centric, but
that's not really a problem with what I want to do.

Anyway, any thoughts?

Why not try Dropbox, that way you control what you pass on to near and far
rellies.

Thanks: it's not such a problem actually to get raw files to people (I
use Dropbox a lot), it's making it readable at the other end. I guess
they could all install Brother's Keeper (which I use), and I could send
them the backups. I was just looking for something more web-based which
would be generally accessible, with appropriate controls, would keep all
the detail and which I could update easily.

There are a couple of options here, both based on web hosting. From personal experience, they are both competent.

The Next Generation (TNG, http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php) is straightforward and it's author works with users to sort out any wrinkles. Lowe cost.

webtrees (http://webtrees.net/index.php/en/) is more detailed, developed by a group of volunteers, free.

Both offer degrees of access control, user inputs (if you want) and privacy settings.

Tribalpages www.tribalpages.com offers all the features you outline.

It has a free version with advertising, and paid for options without
advertising.

Data is uploaded via a gedcom file.

I find it a great way of sharing my data collected over the past 20 years
with others.

I agree with Keith I use Tribal pages I use the paid option because I have
lots of photos and hate adds
