Could SKS please tell me what was at 448 Queen St Melbourne. Marriages
according the Free Christian Church Rites took place there in the early
1900's. Was/is there a church there? What is there now?

Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages used to be at 295 Queen St - saw
it as I drove past today..... 448 appears to be a very high number for the
last numbers seemed to be around 380 ....suggest a re check perhaps

Dear Lois and Alan
My g grandmother's marriage certificate states they were married at 448
Queen Street as well. The building is opposite the current Victoria Market
and is a retail shop - I was hoping to find a qaint stone building but I
guess that disappeared a while ago.

My grandmother was ELIZA FLOWER (nee PEARCE) and she married THOMAS TANGEY
in 1906. This was her second marriage.
Happy Searching

Dear Allan & Lois, I also have a collateral line that begins with a
marriage at this address...as does every marriage on the same page as
his. I was told that this was the address of a 'marriage bureau', not a
church per se. Lesley Melbourne, Australia

Hi,

I have a map of the Melbourne CBD dating from about the mid 1930's -

448 Queens st. is shown as the 6th frontage north of Franklin St. - the
numbering is odd in this area - the property immediately south is no 444
and 452 is immediately north.

hope this helps

cheers

Rob

Thankyou to all who have replied to my query.

It is now known to me that 448 Queen St Melbourne was once used as "Holts Matrimonial Agency" James Holt and Annie Holt were generally the witnesses on the marriage certificates. It's nice the know the building still exists.

Thankyou all for your help

Lois
