I have received a reply! It is not good news. Here is their reply, in part:
"Thank you for your enquiry
The wildcard search option has been removed from the Registry's online
search database.
This option has been removed to improve the reliability of the search
facility for our customers. Wildcard searches were overloading the server,
causing the system to crash periodically.
You can still use '?' to replace a single character in the search."
NSW is going backwards rather than forwards. This is going to make
searching for spelling variants to names more difficult. From a recent
example, how would you easily find this entry when you are searching for a
marriage for Harriet(t)(te) Tyrie:
6796/1894 REEVES TOBIAS W TYRIE HARRICK TAREE
Your first search would probably be harriet for no result. Your next
search might be for harriett for no result. Your next search might be for
harriette for no result. Then you would have to continue with your series
of searches replacing letters with question marks, always bearing in mind
that too many or too few question marks will alter the search results.
Obviously there are many other and more pertinent examples.
An interesting point to consider. Are all these extra searches that we are
going to have to perform going to contribute to server load. Perhaps they
might! Would they then drop the question mark facility?
Perhaps the NSW Govt should have some pressure applied to give the
Department of Attorney General & Justice a relatively small amount of
dollars to enable them to get bigger and faster servers so as they are not
overloaded and that they can at least provide the level of service that we
have had in the past.

I have noticed the site having problems over the past few months.
It is a pity that they cannot go the Victorian way as one can obtain a
copy of the original document within a few minutes for about $17.00. I
know that I would purchase more certificates if I could obtain them
within minutes instead of waiting weeks. I would also prefer to obtain a
copy of the original that relying on a transcription agent to transcribe
it for me and still wait nearly a month.
If Victoria can do it for about $17, then NSW could do it and make a
profit and perhaps :) use the money for a more efficient server.

"I can now confirm that the Registry is currently creating a new database
with improved searching capabilities. The new system will be introduced
within the next 6 to 12 months."
This is welcome news.
