South AustraliaN Marriage requirements 1884

Hi all,

Would someone please direct me to a website where I could check if a birth
certificate was required to be produced prior to a marriage in South
Australia in 1884.

I have googled many variations of this but to my disappointment, I can't
find anything that answers my question.

That may be difficult, Di. Marriage legislation set out what was the
marriageable age only. The forms, methods of proof etc would be laid down
by regulations under the Act. They are far less publicly available. If
there is nothing on Trove, I don't know where else you could look. A contact
in a South Australian legal firm might be able to look it up. English
birth registration began in 1837, so in most cases, a birth certificate
would be available in 1884. Family History SA
(http://www.familyhistorysa.info/births-marriages-deaths/) may be able to
help. As an indication I have a case of bigamy in 1883. The husband left
his wife in NSW and told his new love in SA he was a widower. Plainly, he
wasn't asked for her death certificate.

Hi Doug,

After chatting to my family co-researchers we have come to the conclusion
that the lady in question just decided to use Mary Eleanor instead of her
birth name of Eleanor Anne.
I have birth, marriage and death certificates for all of the family and not
one of them gives her first name as Eleanor. I think she must have taken a
fancy to Mary or someone called her that and it stuck.

We even have photographs of her where her daughter called her Mary - so we
have decided that she can remain Mary for the family history but that it
will be her "also known as" name.

Cheeky lady, she was quite beautiful.

again, but if I can get every fact into one narrative, I will be happy.

I have been trying to write my 'family book' for about 5 years but I have
now made a huge decision that it can't wait any longer and I have actually
printed off a 'draft' for a 95 year old cousin and have included some photos
she would never have seen I hope.

The first one I did was about 10 years ago but it was only made up of names,
births, marriages and deaths. No stories but I have now got some wonderful
information which I have included for my cousin. She actually gave me some
of the stories - she didn't know I had taped our 'chat' and until I hear
from her that others can read those stories too, only she will get to see
them.

I hope I will always be able to add something new to my 'family book'.
