The Zajednicar, Aug. 21, 1996:
The Croatian Government estimates that 145,000 ethnic Serbs live in Croatia
in territories that are not or were not occupied by the Belgrade proxies;
50,425 voted in the fall elections for Serb minority representatives in the
Sabor (parliament).
In addition, about 162,000 Serbs presently live in Eastern Slavonia region
of Croatia which is administered by UNTAES.
Altogether, about 307,000 ethnic Serbs, or roughly one half of the pre-war
population still lives in Croatia. Of those 275,000 that left Croatia,
about 120,000 joined the exodus during the operation "Storm" in August
1995, and about 13,000 joined the exodus during operation "Flash" in May
1995. Others left in prior years as part of the Yugoslav army pullout; as
part of the Belgrade-organized exodus from areas not targeted for
occupation; and, through apartment and home exchangees with Croats in
Serbia and Montenegro. In addition to ethnic Serbs, about 450,000 Croatian
citizens are of non-Croat ethnic background. Altogether, about 15 percent
of Croatian citizens belong to minority groups.
