The new Argentine government of President Nestor Kirchner has ordered an
investigation into the apparent destruction in 1996 of the secret
Immigration records of World War II criminals who entered the country under
the protection of former president Juan Perón.
The files containing the voluminous paperwork for the entry of SS criminals
such as Adolf Eichmann, Josef Mengele and Erich Priebke, among others, were
reportedly kept in a special safe for secret documents at Argentina's
Immigrations Office.
In 1998, Immigrations refused access to these files to writer Uki Goñi, who
was researching material for his book The Real Odessa. Goñi was able to
identify 49 such "secret" numbered files. Immigration officials told Goñi
that the destruction of these files had been ordered because they contained
information that could prove "embarassing" for Argentina.
The destruction of these documents would have been in flagrant violation of
a 1992 presidential decree ordering the release of all Nazi-related
documents in Argentina.
An appeal for an investigation into the whereabouts of these Immigration
files - and for the release of a number of other Nazi-related documents,
including a secret order prohibiting the entry of Jews to Argentina during
World War II - was made by the Wiesenthal Center six months ago, following
the publication of Goñi's book in Argentina.
So far, none of the requested documents has been released by the Argentine
government.
