def. handshake .."a connection-oriented protocol exchanges control
information with the remote system to verify that it is ready to
receive data before sending it. When the handshaking is
successfull, the systems are said to have established a
CONNECTION."
HANDSHAKE will be realized as an interactive room-installation at
VideoFest Berlin. It is meant to enable people (that is who are
not physically in Berlin) to get in touch with the VideoFest. The
project intends to function as a communication interface between
electronic space and lived-in world.
During the festival, interested visitors, artists, media-theorists
are invited to enlarge the information exchange. The data-pool -
the development of which depends upon the process of interaction
taking place - will be accessible via INTERNET and at the local
HANDSHAKE-installation. Prepared communication- and perception-
experiments will show cultural peculiarities of the participants.
How could you participate?
1. Please send us a picture of (you and) the ROOM from which you
join the electronic space of INTERNET.
2. The broad aim of the following experiments is to show cultural
differences and similarities, especially in percepting images
and signs.
a) Rohrschach-test
The file "rohrschach" includes gif-files, which could be edited
by you. Afterwards the viewer should (could) understand, what
you assoziate by viewing the images.
b) Symbols and their significance
The file "signs" includes gif-files. Please describe (textual)
your assoziation by inspecting the signs and primary sketches.
If you like, feel free to send us your own image-files.
Please put your files back to our ftp-server or inform us by
sending email.
We are also interested in communication exchange about following
topics:
3.Life and Work in Eastern Europe
Massmedia like tv and newspapers are our most important source to
get information about the ongoing changes in easteuropean
countrys. These broadcastsystems are spreading news about events
like wars or economic processes but do not tell anything about
circumstances or consequences of the individual.
Recipients grown up in western civilisation look at these events
from a point of view as if everything is just a normal part of
their own media reality on the tv screen (virtual reality).
Artists are asked to reflect their point of view reffering to
changes in everydaylife, artwork in the last years in case of
break-ins, radical changes, economic compulsions, conditions of
work, power freely to dispose of means of production.
4. Electronic Art or Electronic Aided Art ?
Not at least because of the costdecay of electronic means of
production electronic art got widely spread among the
"traditional" artists. Media-art, electronic art and computer art
are flowery expressions of something nobody realy knows what is
behind.
We want to know in which way electronic aided art is somthing more
than cheap support of the entertaiment industries.
What is the surplus of electronic aided art?
What is it beside technic fascination?
What means media artist- ist just because one uses electronic
devices?
Which are social aspects in media art- or is it just escapism?
We appreciate every opinion.
5. Who is Who ?
Are you interested in the HANDSHAKE-project?
Send us information about you, your institution or art-group.
You will receive information from us about other groups, persons,
institutions, activities and projects for your own use.
All results of HANDSHAKE will be documented in detail, and put at
our World Wide Web-disposal.
