Well, for a start, they're called Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. According
to the band, it's a nonsense name (the only Welshish bit is that
'Mynci' is a welsh phonetic spelling of the english word 'monkey').
They were originally supposed to be Gawky Zygotic Mynci, but
apparently their english spelling wasn't up to much, and it came
out 'Gorky'. The "'s" just grew on, I guess. (if you've made
posters for crappy school gigs, you'll know what I mean).
Zygotic's something to do with cell divison, sperm & eggs,
5th year biology. I didn't take much notice. (you can apologise
to Spud for me if you're still reading the group, Gareth Tryfan)

I think that we've established that there isn't a Gorky's web
site (didn't we?) at the moment. You'd possibly get more of a
response from uk.music.alternative, hence the crosspost. (as
I doubt that many .edu sites carry much of the newer uk.*

Not sure whether I believe this or not. I think that Steffan Cravos, a
former member of the group who now has a solo 'project', would know
exactly who Gorky was. I file this under the same heading as the myth
about them living together in a caravan in North Wales for a year.

Not sure about this either. I think their first gig was actually
advertised as 'Gorky's Zygotic Mynci'. I went to their second, so I can't
claim I saw them right at the start :( I do remember seeing the letters
'GZM' chalked on one of the walls of Ysgol Bro Myrddin many years ago. I
could say much more about their early posters, but that's best said in
private email I think.

Has anyone actually seen a British (as opposed to Japanese) copy of
'Introduction to Gorky's Zygotic Mynci'? Has this actually been released
in this country, or is it just a twinkle in the eye of their record
company?

That one had me puzzled as well - they were supposedly in a field
outside Bangor in a caravan for a year. This story is trivially
debunked by pointing out that _nothing_ would stay in a field
outside Bangor for a year without getting nicked, flaky pop-star
caravan or no.

Hmmm. Yes, there is that, isn't there? It's (only marginally) less
trivially debunked by saying that Euros owned up to the fact that it was
a PR ruse on their first session for Mark Radcliffe (back in, oh, it must
have been July last year).
It's worth pointing out at this point that the former producer of Gorky's,
Alan Holmes, is one of the three members of Rheinallt H Rowlands. That
band previously claimed to consist just of one member. 'Rheinallt',
according to most of the Welsh media two years ago, was an ex-quarryman
who was made redundant on the day Ian Curtis died. He gained his
inspiration for his future music-making from then accidentally tuning in
to John Peel on his valve radio and listening to 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'
for the very first time...
...and that myth sounded good enough to be true, but tragically wasn't.
Rheinallt H Rowlands' album, 'Bukowski', is reminiscent of Gorky's earlier
efforts in places, and worth a listen - if you like that sort of thing.
It's on Ankst, incidentally.

If it's the same song (there's no reason to suggest why there are *two*
songs called "Ice Cream Man", eh?), then it was also done brilliantly by
the Modern Lovers on the Modern Lovers Live album (I think that the album
was re-released by Creation's label Revola a couple of years ago) along
with lots of other kiddy favourites.

Zygotic sounds remarkably like psychotic, though doesn't it. Perhaps the
whole name is an adaptation of "gawky psychotic monkey"?
(That's just one of my 3-o'clock-in-the-morning theories, of which I have
no evidence whatsoever.)

Is this in vino veritas or have you finally decided to give Monty Python
his deserved credit?
Haven't heard this, but maybe you mean Jonathan Richman's song of that
name?

I'm doing a video for college about Welsh bands, so
if anyone's got any more information about what Gorky's
are up to then I would appreciate it. :)
(or Manics, 60FT Dolls, Super Furry's, Catatonia etc.)

The Modern Lovers' song was one of Jonathan Richman's own. BTW, 1967
seems an oddly early date for Clover, unless you don't mean the country-
rock Americans who spent the middle 1970s in London. They occasionally
backed E Costello before he formed The Attractions.
