There's nothing like a van Gogh on the living room wall to impress your friends
- but don't tell them it cost only $600.
It's not a print, but a genuine oil painting on canvas, although admittedly not
by the hand of the master himself.
The painting is a modern reproduction, a very good copy of the original,
painted by a modern artist.
It is one of about 170 reproductions of old masters and contemporary classics
for sale at the Reworks Gallery on Wellington's Victoria St.
Reworks was set up by Wellington couple Donna and Chris Gollins. Although they
have no retail or arts experience - Donna is a registered nurse and Chris is a
commercial real estate agent - they have modelled the business on similar
galleries they visited in Australia and Europe, where reproduction art has
become extremely popular.
And if you do not like the selection they have on offer, you can take in a
photograph of your favourite painting and they will have it faithfully
reproduced in oils.
Most of the paintings they sell are about 90cm by 160cm and cost about $500 to
$600 unframed - a bargain by any standard.
The concept of high quality reproductions is now well established in Europe,
where several studios specialise in producing such paintings.
They are not intended to deceive, they carry no signature and would not fool an
expert. But to the untrained eye, it could be hard to tell a reproduction from
an original.
Donna Gollins said the paintings were intended as a better-quality alternative
to prints and were proving very popular.
She imported the paintings from Vietnam, where a specialist studio produced
them to order.
The artists the studio employs had all received classical training and the
quality of their work was high. Low labour costs in Vietnam made the paintings
affordable here.
AdvertisementAdvertisementGollins said many customers were also ordering
original paintings to be made from their favourite photographs.
For example, you could supply a wedding photograph and it would be turned into
an oil portrait. Or a postcard of a favourite spot could be turned into a
landscape.
However, Gollins stressed that the painting would be an exact reproduction of
the photograph, so you would need to be sure that you were happy with its
composition before commissioning the painting.
She had not yet had any requests to provide reproductions of works by New
Zealand artists, and said copyright laws prevented this until 50 years after an
artist's death, so contemporary artworks were a no-go.
However, if if you fancy a Goldie, there is no reason why you cannot have one
made.
Although the gallery had been open for only a month, Gollins was already
looking for bigger premises, where she hoped to show original works by
contemporary local artists alongside the Vietnamese reproductions.
