Dear Sir:
I believed that the Name Dien Bien Phu which in chinese/vietnames
(Ha'n Vie^.t) meant border town or border district was relatively
recent. It was not invented by the Vietcong because was present in
maps under French Colonization.I suspected that the name was given by
our Emperor Minh Mang (182-1840)who through a royal edict changed the
names of many provinces in Vietnam as a political decision to show
among other things, Vietnamese domination over these territpries.
Those with names reminiscent of ancient/foreign origin were changed.
Muong Thanh its old name was clearly with Thai connotation. There was
a legend/belief that all Thai including the ones in Thailand, Laos,
Yunnan/China and of course Vietnam (Province of Lai Cha^u)origibated
from a cave or cavern located in Muong Thanh. If this were true then
Muong Thanh Was the Thai`s ancestra; home. Just like Some Vietnamese
believed, but here erroneously, that the Vietnamese Ancestral home was
South China in a terrotory encompassing the Province of Fukine,
Chekiang, Quang Chau and Quangsi.
