and E-Mail address on the Internet it
would get canceled and all hell would
rain down on them. I'd rather choose
myself, through filters, what I do or
do not see. If ____________ returns
and makes a widecast announcement on
the new media I sure as hell would
like to know, wouldn't you?

They would not do that. Spam is evil and they are
supposed (accordingly to those collections of
tails like koran, bible etc) to bring good, That's
why they would not spam it all over but post their
stuff in some specific *announce group. Do you want
alt.buddha.coming or alt.jesus.resurrect created
especially for you?

Why would I care? They'd show it on TV anyway. There
are many great events happening in out lives but it
doesn't mean that everyone should announce them as
widely as they can. I mailbomb many suckers who sends me
junk and I don't care if (s)he is Mohammed, Krishna, or
Joe Marketer -- no one is entitled to send me commercials
for free and subscribe me to stupid junk emailing lists.

Why should the "techies" not be patriotic in defending their land from
the invading hordes who aren't interested in living here.
They're not, you know. They'll laugh at you just as hard as they laugh
at us, they laugh at us because we can't stop them yet, they'll laugh
at you because you're helping them through some higher motive they
don't recognise.
And when there is so much advertising and spam that no-one can hear
anything or say anything, they'll walk away.
You don't understand, do you, that if you allow people TOTAL freedom,
TOTAL free expression it will be a mess. Total freedom means I can
send you email every thirty seconds forever to whatever mailbox you
have and you can't stop me. How free will you be then ? How free the
people who want to talk to you ? You can't filter me... I'm free too,
under those circumstances to send anything I want, including faking
mail from your friends.. [ I hasten to add, I am in no way threatening
any kind of mailbombing. I am giving this as an example of total
freedom -- the removal of ALL social rules ] the only end result of
all this is that you would have to keep moving mailboxes ( live in
fear of discovery ) or give up a mailbox ( loss of freedom )
It means that a newsgroup, say, rec.mountaineering can be advertised
to the point where 1% of the postings are from moutaineers and the
other 99% are adverts for sex-lines. Until the ratio is 99.9% and
0.1%.. until every single posting is a sex-line advert. How free are
the mountaineering people to exchange information then ?
Yes, you can have personal filtering, but without limits, there will
be no traffic to them. No-one could afford the bandwidth required to
carry the results of EVERYONE who wanted to, advertising without
limit.
And when that happens Usenet will be dead. How many television views
would watch if there was NOTHING but commercials, or if there were 59
minutes of commercials in each hour ?
And the smart advertisers will have got out of the market ahead with
their money and the dumb ones will go broke. But no-one will ever STOP
advertising on the internet, because companies dare not stop marketing
in a medium, while the absolutely slimmest chance of a sale remains.
But it will be over and that will be your fault because you can't see
that everything has to be moderated, but the the advertisers are too
greedy to do it themselves.
We already know we can't ask them nicely to advertise only where
appropriately. That's known. That's fact. So there are only two
choices. Someone has to enforce what pass for laws around here or we
quit now.
If you don't like living in this country we call Usenet, if you don't
like our laws, you are free to leave. You are free to go create your
own country with your own laws which YOU can lay down. But the
advertisers and marketers WILL follow you, so you'd better be prepared
to either welcome them with open arms and accept the massive bandwidth
requirements and storage costs and whatever else follows or to fight
them while they're still coming ashore.
What you are advocating is tyranny of the majority. The advertisers
send more adverts so they should have more rights. How is that freedom ?
Everyone keeps talking about their inalienable rights. Never their
responsibilities. The advertisers keep shouting about "we have the
right to advertise free from interference", never "we have a
responsibility to respect this world - to advertise appropriately".
What about the rights of people to read about mountaineering without
being advertised at ?
Everyone here has a responsibility to respect each other. My
information reaches you through the consideration of a dozen networks
and a thousand companies and a million individuals, all of which are
happy to pass that information on in exchange that I pass a little of
theirs ( which in fact happens because Demon gets money from me --
that pays for their network, which passes packets on to others. I own
a tiny peice of the internet, effectively, and so do you. )
If the advertisers were respectful, no-one would have a problem. But
they are disrespectful. They are rude and inconsiderate. They steal
and defraud. They forge and tresspass. They treat each of us with
contempt and distain. They bear malice towards those same people whose
actions in fact made possible theirs. Their lack of gratitude to those
who built this community is unprecedented in all human history.
And you defend them.
[ As an example of advertisers behaving responsibly, whilst adding my
.sig to this I was disturbed by double-glazing cold-callers turning up
to try and sell me double glazing. The frequence of this particular
company arriving is now down to a fortnight. I wouldn't mind, but each
time I patiently explain to the person that I don't own the house, I
only rent it. And they keep coming back, on the off-chance that that's
changed. Between the various companies around here I get several such
calls a week now. My phone number is unlisted which avoids them
phoning me, but how do I get an invisible front door ? ]

Commercial emaillers to this site should be prepared to accept our complaints
by email and phone, complaints to their ISP, notifications of possible tax
frauds, help requests to the appropriate authorities and maybe kernel images.
