WASHINGTON (Reuters) - House of Representatives Democratic leader
Richard Gephardt said on Wednesday Republican sale of a Sept. 11 photo
of President Bush (news - web sites) to raise campaign money risked
jeopardizing bipartisanship on the war on terrorism.
At the same time, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, an Illinois
Republican, expressed surprise at the sale and distanced himself from
it, noting the Republican Party would probably think twice before
doing it again given the furor that has erupted.
The sale is part of a party fund-raising effort for the November
mid-term elections. Democrats complained it appeared Republicans were
trying to take advantage of a national tragedy to raise money.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer (news - web sites) attempted to
put some distance between Bush and the Republican Party over the
photo, saying "nobody in the White House knew that those specific
pictures were
He said the White House did not object to use of the photo as part of
a $150 package, but that the decision over whether to use it did not
reach the level of Bush political adviser Karl Rove and that it was
"safe to say" party officials will get White House approval next time
they use pictures.
Gephardt, a Missouri Democrat, said real progress has been made on the
war on terrorism as Democrats and Republicans have set aside
traditional differences and worked together.
"The question about the picture, it is a disappointment because we
cannot break into partisan fighting about the war on terrorism," he
told reporters.
