I understand that they hope to find a lying Buddha in that area. The
destruction of the Buddha statues in the cliff was truly sad, and a loss to
the world. Hopefully archeologists may go on to find a lying Buddha that
was spared destruction.

I just saw a documentary about a discovery of a large Monastary near
the site of the destroyed status. This is exactly as described by a
monk from China in ancient times. They have so far uncovered what
appears to be a status of a large foot at the monsatary. Base on the
size of the foundation, the direction East West, it appears that this
may be the thousand feet long sleeping buddha.

Did you see what Afghans did to save paintings and films? It was tremendous!
Artists conserved paintings by painting watercolor over oils to remove
images of people. Film negatives were hidden behind a darkened doorway,
sealed with drywall. Amazing, and wonderful.
