Police: TV host's son tried to snatch woman's purse

(New York-AP) -- The 23-year-old son of former T-V morning news host Bryant
Gumbel was arrested in Manhattan early this morning and charged with
attempting to steal a woman's purse.

Police said the victim was walking along East 71st Street just after 2 a-m
when she was grabbed from behind by a man who also reached for her purse.

Police say the two fell to the ground, and ran in opposite directions.

When police responded to the scene, they drove the woman around the Upper
East Side neighborhood to see if she could identify her assailant.

Police say the unidentified woman, who hurt her knee in the collision,
pointed out Bradley Gumbel walking on East 80th Street.

He was arrested and charged with attempted robbery. Police said the purse
was not recovered.

Gumbel's lawyer Ben Brafman, called the arrest ``a terrible mistake.''

Brafman said his client, who lives in the neighborhood, was walking home
after dropping off a date, and was never involved in any crime.

A spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, said the
evidence was being reviewed by prosecutors.

Gumbel left C-B-S's ``The Early Show'' in May, and still hosts the H-B-O
program ``Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.''
