GRADUATION BANQUET
The Ukrainian Canadian Business and Professional Association of
Windsor held its 50th Annual Graduation Banquet at Chez Talbot, St. Clair
College in Windsor, on Sunday, April 28, 2002. President Leisha
Nazarewich welcomed 86 members and guests to the banquet and the Very
Reverend Archpriest Michael Skrumeda of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox
Cathedral in Windsor gave the invocation.
Dr. Myron Hlynka was the guest speaker. He spoke of the history,
achievements, and people of the Ukrainian Canadian Business and
Professional Association of Windsor over the past 50 years.
Dr. Anthony Wachna was the first president of the Windsor Association. All past
presidents in attendance were introduced. They were Ron Boyer, Eugene
Barna, Ted Kostyniuk, Oriel Neilson, Myron Hlynka, Eva Perduk, Marie Boyer,
and Leisha Nazarewich. The work of Ron Boyer was particularly recognized as
it was during his presidency that Heritage Awards were introduced in 1990.
Former presidents Nestor Kostyniuk and Joseph Proctor spent many years on
fund raising through bingos which resulted in hundreds of thousands of
dollars in donations going to Windsor area social programs and to Ukrainian
Canadian programs in Windsor and across Ontario. The bingo funds were the
major source of funding for the Heritage Awards given to Windsor area
university students of Ukrainian ancestry. Recipients of bingo funds
included Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital, Windsor Regional Hospital, Windsor
Regional Children's Centre, Hospice of Windsor, The Childs' Place, the
Windsor Library, St. Vladimir Institute(Toronto), Sonyashnyk Ukrainian
Dance Group (Chatham), Barvinok Ukrainian Dancers (Windsor), Peter Kuzyk
(poetry books), Ukrainian National Federation of Windsor, Ukrainian Womens'
Organization of Windsor, to name just a few. The association has become
well recognized for its generous donations.
In the 1970's the association
offered bursaries for students studying the Ukrainian language at the
University of Windsor. Unfortunately, the university no longer has
Ukrainian language classes.
In conjunction with his speech, Myron Hlynka and Oriel Neilson both set
up displays of photos and other material related to the history of the
Windsor association. Oriel even had photos from the first banquet in
1953.
Denis Galay, Chair of the Graduation committee, introduced Melanie
Kostyniuk, who graduated from the University of Windsor with a B.Ed.
degree. She was presented with a small gift.
The Heritage Awards Committee consisted of Dr. Myron Hlynka, Eva Perduk,
and Vera Tkachuk. Eva introduced this year's recipients and presented each
with a cheque for $500. This year there were eight winners. All students
are of Ukrainian ancestry and are from the Windsor area. They are
Genevieve Gorski - History major at Trent University
Daria Horbal - Biology major at the University of Windsor
Natalia Kielbasa - Geography and French major at the University of Windsor
Iryna Kis - Business Administration major at the University of Windsor
Michael Lozynsky - Sociology and Communication, University of Windsor
Taisa Petruk - Fine Arts (dance), York University
Oksana Pikush - International Relations, University of Windsor
Toma Regenbogen - Science major, University of Western Ontario
The Heritage Awards were started in 1990 and to date, 43 Windsor students
have received $21,500 in awards. We wish all of this year's students
success as they continue their studies.
Following the award presentations, award winners Iryna Kis and Oksana
Pikush gave their own special thanks. They sang a few songs in Ukrainian
and in English, with Iryna accompanying on guitar.
The afternoon ended with a raffle. Prizes were win by Mike Bobbie, Nel
Yaworsky, and Taras Cebrynsky. The grand prize of a TV was won by Darleen
Swintak.
St. Clair College provided a delicious meal with two special anniversary
cakes. A good time was had by all as we celebrated our 50th anniversary.
ANNUAL MEETING
The Annual Meeting of the Ukrainian Business and Professional Association
of Windsor will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at 1033
Ottawa St., in Windsor. The guest speaker will be Cathy Knight, who is with
the Essex County Branch of the Geneology Society. Please join us as we
explore the fascinating world of geneology. Light refreshments will be
served by the Ukrainian Women's Organization.
BINGO
At the April 15 meeting, the executive of the UCB&P (Windsor) reluctantly
voted to discontinue our participation in bingo. As a result in changes in
bingo regulations, and a stricter enforcement of rules, we were unable to
pay our bingo workers from bingo receipts. Consequently, our association
had to bear these expenses out of our general account which is funded only
by annual dues. This proved to be impossible. The funds that are remaining in
our bingo account will have to be dispersed over a specified period of
time.
CARROUSEL
As part of Windsor's Carrousel of Nations, there will be St. Vladimir's
Ukrainian Village, 2000 Tecumseh Road East, Friday, June 14, from 4 p.m. to
1 a.m. and Saturday, June 15, from noon to 1 a.m. Entertainment will be
provided by the Barvinok Dance Ensemble, the band Zabava from Sudbury, and
the Ukraina Dance Ensemble from Toronto. Shows are at 7, 9 and 11 p.m. each
evening. Each show is different. As always, great Ukrainian food will be
served.
KURELEK EXHIBITION
The Art Gallery of Windsor will mark the 25th anniversary of William
Kurelek's death with an exhibit of his work July 13-September 15, 2002. All
20 pieces of his "Prairie Boy's Summer" will be on display. The collection
is on permanent loan to the Art Gallery of Windsor from Hiram Walker's.
The exhibit will be on the third floor Explorations Gallery. There will be
two interpretive rooms which will feature the text of Kurelek's book
"Prairie Boy's Summer" and will have some hand's on activities for children
and adults alike. The Art Gallery of Windsor is open Tuesday- Thursday, 11
a.m. - 7 p.m., Friday, 11 a.m. -9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. - 5
p.m. It is closed on Mondays.
