Ukrainian Famine (1932-33) Rememberance Day
Contact: Tamara Gallo Tel: (212) 228-6840
FAMINE TO BE COMMEMORATED AT ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL
New York, NY (UCCA) -- On Saturday, November 20th at 1PM a solemn
requiem mass in observance of Ukraine's Great Famine of 1932-33 will
take place at St. Patrick's Cathedral on 5th Avenue and 51st Street in
New
York City. The ecumenical prayer service conducted by Archbishop
Antony of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Bishop Vasyl of the
Ukrainian Catholic Church will also include Ukraine's Ambassador to the
United States, the Honorable Anton Buteiko, as the main speaker and the
Dumka Choir from New York.
In 1932-33 between seven and ten million Ukrainians were starved to
death as a result of the Soviet policy of forced collectivization. In
sheer
numbers this genocidal tragedy ranks among the worst cases of man's
inhumanity towards man and is perhaps the most extreme example of the
use of food as a weapon.
We ask the Ukrainian community of New York and the surrounding areas
not to organize other events for this day but rather to take part in
this
national commemoration to honor the victims of our country's worst
tragedy.
