TRIP TO UKRAINE & RUSSIA, JULY/AUGUST 1994

JULY 28 -- Leave NYC on Czech Airlines, Flight #601 (plane is
a French Airbus) at 6:30 P.M.
JULY 29 -- Arrive Prague airport, 8:40 A.M. Czech Airlines
has told us we will have time to take taxis from the airport
to see the beautiful architecture at Wenceslas Square in the
center of Prague. Leave Prague at 2:35 P.M. on Czech
Airlines. Arrive Kiev, capital of Ukraine, at 7:10 P.M. Check
into Hotel Tourist, late supper at hotel. First night in
Kiev.
JULY 30 -- Kiev City tour, including Percherskaya Lavra and
caves, Golden Gate of Kiev, jewelry museaum, St. Sophia's
Cathedral. Optional evening event at your own expense
(circus, ballet, opera, or folk music). Second night in Kiev.
JULY 31 -- Optional church service at Cathedral of St.
Vladimir. Visit Babi Yar Memorial and have short memorial
service there. Shopping on Adriyivskiy St. (near St. Andrew's
Cathedral). Walk to Independence Square in evening. Third
night in Kiev.
AUG. 1 --- Visit to farm near Kiev to see how American farm
equipment is being used. Tour of a milk factory. Children of
Chernobyl Hospital visit. Meeting with Maria Taran, KievRadio
reporter. Possible meeting with KGB personnel. Dneipr River
evening cruise. Fourth night in Kiev.
AUG. 2 -- Bus trip to Chernigov. Tour of 11-18th century
cathedrals, historical monuments, and monks' caves. Home
visits or other evening event. Fifth and last night in Kiev.
AUG. 3 -- Travel to Pirogov to see Open-Air Museum (folk
architecture and furnishings). Lunch at Windmill restaurant.
Bus to Vinnitsa. Check into Hotel Pivdeney Buh and have
supper. Lecture by Anatoli Kushnir on "Ukraine Today."
(Anatoli can lecture on topics of your choice along the way.
He is highly intelligent and well-informed.)
AUG. 4 -- Tour of Hitler's bunker. Bus trip to Kamenets-
Podilski (ancient meeting site of trade routes). Check into
Hotel Smotruch. Visit Old Town and the market. Lecture on
privatization (independent Ukraine's first one occurred
here). Supper at Ukraina Restaurant. In evening, home visits
with English teachers or organ concert at cathedral in Old
Town.
AUG. 5 -- Day in village Makiv, where Dulls lived for 6
months in 1989. Walk the village, visit Anna's cottage,
Toli's apartment, the "little church," kindergarten, sugar
factory, sanatorium. Lunch at Makiv restaurant. Meeting with
teachers and doctors at village school. Tour Ukraina
collective farm and visit the home of artist Oleg (former
"Greenhouse Gang" worker). In evening, go to Stupentsi
(Dulls' house) for famous potato roast picnic supper prepared
by "Greenhouse Gang."
AUG. 6 -- After breakfast, visit ancient fortress at river
gorge in Kamenets-Podilski. Travel to Kolomiya to see Museum
of Pisanka (Ukrainian Easter eggs) and crafts in wood. On to
Yaremcha in Carpathian Mts. Late lunch at restaurant there.
After lunch, craft shopping and viewing waterfall. On to
Vorokhta. Supper and night at mountain lodge.
AUG. 7 -- Day of rest and relaxation in mountains. Chair lift
ride. In evening, shish-ke-bob. Second night in Vorokhta.
AUG. 8 -- Leave mountains and travel to Ivano-Frankivsk.
Check into Hotel Ukraine. Walk on mall, in center, and see
marketplace and joint venture Hotel Roksolana. Dinner with
U.S. Peace Corps volunteers. Conversation about politics and
economics with Ms. Myroslava Rozdolska, former journalist and
former democratic head of elected district council. Night in
Ivano-Frankivsk.
AUG. 9 -- Visits to media and government people in Ivano-
Frankivsk. Stop at Dull's home (home of Myroslava's parents)
in Tismenitsa. Walk to river. Visit Tismenitsa fur factory.
Travel to Tlumach; talk with Mikola (independent farmer and
member of new farmers' cooperative). Evening at Jane's
apartment (Dull's 1993 interpreter). Second night in Ivano-
Frankivsk.
AUG. 10 -- Bus to Pochaiv (monastery where the Virgin Mary
appeared in the past). Simple lunch at Pochaiv. Travel to
Lviv. Check into Hotel Sputnik. Supper and farewell to
Ukrainian guides and friends. Free time for walking on the
Square. Night in Lviv.
AUG. 11 -- City tour, including University of Lviv, and pizza
business begun by U.S. Ukrainian. Lunch in hotel. Check out
of hotel and leave on the night train to Moscow.
AUG. 12 -- Arrive Moscow about 9 A.M. Check into Hotel
Izmailova. Moscow city tour, including overlook from Lenin
Hills. Walking tour of Kremlin, including interior of one
cathedral. Visit with Bob Meyerson (American who has lived in
Moscow for 10 years). Walking tour of Red Square. St. Basil's
Cathedral, Gum's dept. store. Home visits. Night in Moscow.
AUG. 13 -- Optional visit to Seventh-Day Adventist church.
Tour of unique Metro (subway) stations. Tretyakov Gallery.
Novodevichy Monastery (Convent of the Maidens -- 16/17th
century.) Optional Bolshoi Theatre performance at your
expense, circus, or other evening activity. Second night in
Moscow.
AUG. 14 -- Optional Sunday church services (Baptist,
Orthodox). Shopping. Night train to St. Petersburg (2-bed
compartments).
AUG. 15 -- Arrive in St. Petersburg and check into Hotel
Okhtinskaya. City tour, including Peskarev Cemetery, Peter
and Paul Fortress, St. Isaac Cathedral. Visit Winter Palace,
which includes Hermitage Art Museum (second only to the
Louvre). Night in St. Petersburg.
AUG. 16 -- Hydrofoil boat to Summer Palace. Visit to Petrov
Research Institute and Oncology Hospital. Evening event --
concert, ballet, circus, or home visits. Second night in St.
Petersburg.
AUG. 17 -- Zina's shelter for homeless teenage girls.
Shopping on Nevsky Prospect. Good-bye party. Third night in
St. Petersburg.
AUG. 18 -- Leave for the United States, Czech Airlines,
Flight #600, at 8 A.M. Arrive Prague, 10 A.M. Leave Prague at
12:40 P.M. Arrive JFK at 4 P.M.
This itinerary is subject to change.
COST: $2800, from New York City and back.
NOT INCLUDED: optional excursions, fees for passports and
visas ($75), evening entertainment, personal and baggage
insurance, lunch in Prague, anything of a strictly personal
nature. Crosscurrents will take care of visas (info later).
Crosscurrents recommends AAA for personal and baggage
insurance. It also covers quick evacuation back to the U.S.
due to illness.
A $300 DEPOSIT PER PERSON IS REQUESTED TO BE SENT AS SOON
AS POSSIBLE. It is fully refundable before June 1 or if the
trip doesn't go. After June 1 some of the deposit will be
retained for arrangements already made. Please make your

the "Shred" you meant to say "Shroud" which is "plashchanitsa", not
