I have been transalating Bangla Dictionary of Biography, and surprised
to see that (Hazrat) Shah Jalal is from Konya, Turky. Shah Jalal
preached Islam in the eastern part of Bengal in the early 14th century.
I'm from Sylhet, Bangladesh, where Shah Jalal's mazaar is located. We
have a conception that Shah Jalal is from Yemen. Even, his name is
mentioned as Shah Jalal Mozorrodh e-Yamoni.
I know a few Turkish people who are from Konya. I saw their luggage tag
says "Mevlana"(pronounced 'mewlana'). I inquired, and was told that
since Mewlana Jalal Uddin Rumi's mazaar is in Konya, the city also took
the synonym 'Mevlana' to respect the author of Mosnovi.
Since Shah Jalal is from Konya, and was born couple of years after the
death fo the the Mewlana, I was very interested to see if anyone knows
any connections between the two.
Here is the background on (Hazrat) Shah Jalal:
Born: 1271, Konya, Turky: .
Death: 1347, Sylhet, Bangladesh (according to Ibn Botuta)
Full name: Sheikh-ul Mashaek Mokhdum Sheikh Shah Jalal Mozorrodh Bin
Muhammed.
Life: He was raised by his uncle, Syed Ahmed Kabir, in Mecca. He
traveled toward India and reached Delhi in circa 1300. At that time,
Sylhet was ruled by a Hindu king, Gour Gavinda. The only Muslim in
Sylhet was Sheikh Burhan Uddin. The Sheikh's only son was slaughtered
by the king because a cow was sacrified at his 'Akika'. Shah Jalal was
requested by Nizam Uddin Awlia(1236-1325) to go to Sylhet to resque the
Sheikh.
Shah Jalal came to Sylhet in 1303 along with 303 of his disciples. One
of them was my ancestor, (Hazrat) Shah Kaalu. They easily won Sylhet,
and preached Islam in the Ganges delta.
Shah Jalal's mazaar is the biggest attraction in Sylhet. Many of his
disciples are burred in different parts of Sylhet, and highly revered.
