Family commitments have kept me from returning to Turkey, but what i found
there and the people themselves, I loved.
In any group of people there are hooks and nuisances, there are different
ways of dealing with them.
History and culture can only be separated from the national identity with
difficulty.
I have just subscibed to this group. It's a pity to see such bitterness
between different races still exists and that it is so openly aired.
If I love the Turks and the Greeks, and they seemed to enjoy my company, why
can they not get on with each other?

Yes you are right James, "it's 'really' a pity to see such bitterness
between different 'but somehow closed' races still exists and that it is
so openly, and so 'bitterly' aired."

But I could not understand the logic of you justification. I like cats
and I also like dogs. Both cats and dogs like my company, but do you
believe that this is sufficient to make them love each other.

Well, Can I think James' logic is not that bad after all. When you are
talking about dogs and cats don't forget that these two predators are each
others natural enemy in the sense that they are competing for the same
prey. Neither Turkey nor Greece are predetor animals! Actually, their
existance is mutually beneficial... Eg, more peace and stabelness brings
in more tourist cash.

Just a little anecdote about Greeks and Turks...

My husband is Turkish and my in-laws came to visit us here in the US for
the first time last summer. We took them up to Detroit's Greektown
for dinner one night and our waitress happened to also be the owner of
the restaurant. This was my mother-in-law's first experience with Greek
culture and people and by the end of dinner she and the owner were
crying and hugging each other. My mother-in-law was shocked by the
similarities between Greek & Turkish food, culture, etc. And she got so
upset that her country and the country of this woman who was so similar
to her are so intent on destroying each other. It was an amazing
experience and I guess you had to see it to understand, but it was
probably the most touching thing I'd ever seen.
