NEWS BRIEFS
* According to the daily Turkiye, Turkey's minister of state responsible
for economy Mr. Kemal Dervis, gave detailed information about Turkey's
current economic situation at the Council of Ministers meeting last week.
Mr. Dervis expressed his discontent over the comparisons made between
Turkey and Argentina's economic situations. He argued that
there were no similarities.
Emphasizing that the two countries were implementing two very different
economic programs, Mr. Dervis said the program being pursued in Turkey,
was more realistic than Argentina's.
Reminding that while the Argentinian government employees saw a decrease
in their salaries, the ones in Turkey received an increase of $15 a month.
Mr. Dervis said he was not concerned about civil disturbances.
He said after the International Monetary Fund Executive Council's
release of the third portion of the loan to be delivered to Turkey more
positive economic developments will occur.
Mr. Dervis took over his position in the Turkish cabinet after a severe
economic crisis hit the Turkish economy earlier in the year. He was
previously a World Bank executive.
Politicians with vested interests are not usually happy with the changes
he is making, and there are often open arguments with him, even from the
ranks of the ruling coalition.
Last week, there were also rumors about his removal from the cabinet.
* The daily Cumhuriyet reports that Turkey's permanent representative to
the U.N., delivering a speech at the 53rd meeting of the UN Human Rights
sub commission in Geneva, said Turkey is continuing with its determined
efforts to improve human rights and accelerate the democratization
process.
* Last agreements on the Shahdeniz Project through which the Azerbaijani
natural gas will be transported to Turkey are expected to be signed next
week, reports the daily Turkiye.
* Turkey's Banking Regulation and Supervision Board prepared a report on
the reforms in banking, wrote the daily Cumhuriyet.
According to the report the number of foreign partners in the banking
sector is expected to rise dramatically.
* Turkey's Minister of Tourism says that 6.6 million people visited Turkey
in the first 7 months of the year, spending $3 billion. The revenue is
expected to top $10 by the end of the year.
2.5 million of the visitors arrived directly at the Mediterranean resort
province of Antalya, reports Cumhuriyet.
* The Turkish News says that Hungary is contemplating purchasing fighter
planes from Turkey.
If the Hungarian decide on the F-16's Turkey is producing under US
license, the deal will involve 24 planes.
* Those of you who are eagerly waiting for the aliens' arrival on earth,
the fourth UFO museum in the world will be established soon in Istanbul,
Turkey!
ARTS AND CULTURE
Edited for the Turkish Radio Hour by Cuneyt Capanoglu
* Istanbul Municipality has allocated funds to restore some of Istanbul's
historical ruins. According to the Turkish Daily News, the Mayor of
Istanbul, Mr. Erol Cakir, launched the project.
* Turkish News reports that series of activities will be held in Istanbul
on September 2nd to mark the "Jewish Culture and European Day."
The annual event, which was first held in France's Alsace region in
1996, is now being organized in 21 European countries by the European
Jewish Communities Council.
Chief Rabbi's office in Turkiye issued a written statement indicating
that the activities and concerts are scheduled for Sunday, September 2nd
between 10.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. at Neve Shalom Culture Center, Ashkenaz
and Italian synagogues, and 50th year Turkish Jewish Museum.
* Turkish News reports that Turkish and Greek artists held the so-called
"The Great Concert" to help strengthen the relations between Turkiye and
Greece.
The concert was held at the ancient Ephesus Amphitheatre on August 3rd
with about 270 participating musicians representing the Bilkent Symphony
Orchestra, Thessaloniki Harmony Choir and the Sayar Nova Choir.
* The Ministry of Culture Amateur Youth Folk Dances and Folk Music Group
will travel to Greece to attend Cultural August and Secek Festivals.
Speaking about the activities of the group, Turkish Minister of
Culture, Istemihan Talay, said that festivals were great opportunities to
improve bilateral relations and to meet new people.
"Our aim is to introduce our culture to the Greeks, to provide
psychological support to Turks living in Greece and to reinforce
friendship between our two countries."
