KUSAV, one of the leading auction houses in Istanbul
Istanbul - Turkish Daily News
KUSAV, the Foundation for Fine Arts and Culture, is a charitable trust
formed by its president, Mrs. Cigdem Simavi. Its aim is to conserve
the Turkish national and cultural heritage and to actively promote and
publicize them, both nationally and internationally, in order to make
them more accessible to a wider public while encouraging cultural
exchange.
In the early part of 1990, after ascertaining the proposed aims and
plans of the foundation, the Ministry of Culture deeded a significant
building to KUSAV, namely the Alay Kosku (The Procession Pavilion), on
the grounds of Topkapi Palace.
The aims of the foundation are:
- to make Turkish people more aware of their rich cultural heritage;
- to encourage an appreciation of the historic sequence of the
development of art in Turkey;
- to work with government and other public sector institutions in
conserving and restoring Turkey's cultural and artistic past;
- to increase public awareness of the role of art in daily life;
- to enable students to pursue artistic research and studies in
related fields;
- to award scholarships for further studies abroad;
- to cooperate with international bodies in order to encourage foreign
participation in Turkish cultural events;
- to encourage suitable international sponsorship in the field of
Turkish art.
The annual "Istanbul Antiques & Decorative Arts Fair" forms an
important part of the foundation's activities. It also organizes
smaller and more frequent public auctions of antiques and collectibles
as well as contemporary art exhibitions, fashion shows and courses on
archaeology and history of art throughout the year.
Proceeds from all of KUSAV's activities are used to fund these
projects and support is welcomed.
