CALL FOR PAPERS
THE COMPULSORY EXCHANGE OF POPULATIONS BETWEEN
GREECE AND TURKEY : ASSESSMENT OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF
THE TREATY OF LAUSANNE 1923 (75TH ANNIVERSARY)
An international multidisciplinary conference hosted by the
Refugee Studies Programme, University of Oxford
4th-6th September 1998
BACKGROUND
The conference is planned to mark the 75th anniversary of the Treaty of
Lausanne and the Compulsory Exchange of Populations in which the forced
migration of well over one million people was ratified by the League of Nations
in 1923. This unprecedented official population exchange between Greece and
Turkey had manifold ramifications - political, economic, demographic, social,
and cultural dimensions - indeed in all aspects of the life of these two countries.
Surprisingly, however, the event and its aftermath have not been widely studied
and there has been no co-ordinated assessment of its consequences. Its additional
importance lies in the long time-scale : there is particular contemporary relevance
to the study of the many aspects of the population exchange, particularly for our
broader understanding of forced migration, of the long-term processes of
resettlement and absorption, and of identity formation.
CONFERENCE AIMS
The primary intention is to explore the multifaceted consequences - economic,
social, cultural, demographic, settlement/landscape - for both countries. It is
hoped that this will provide new insights into developments in these states over
the past 75 years. Within a wider context, however, exploration of a variety of
issues associated with the exchange may aid our understanding of current
political tensions and their proposed solutions in the region of the Balkans and
of the eastern Mediterranean.
The conference will provide an academic forum for scholars who do not have the
chance for regular contact, in some cases because of the divisions between their
disciplines, in others for geo-political reasons. Papers are sought from diverse
disciplines - history, sociology, anthropology, geography, architecture, folklore,
literature.

- Course Description
This unique course is an introduction to the history and the major
archaeological sites along the ancient Silk Road. It focus on the history
of Xinjiang (or Chinese Turkistan; Eastern Turkistan) in northwestern
China, situated on a major cultural cross road that connected the
Greco-Roman with Indian-Buddhist, and Easter and Central Asian cultures.
It surveys the geography of China and Central Asia; the development of
human habitation in the region; but focus on the one thousand years
between approximately 100 BCE (before the common era) to 900 CE (the
common era) when the Silk Road had its maximum impact through Europe and
Asia.
In teaching this unique course Dr. Dolkun Kamberi combines several
disciplines, including history, archaeology, and art history. Dr. Kamberi
has had over twenty years experience in first hand archaeological work in
Xinjiang, China excavating the remains of ancient civilizations in that
region. Trained in China and the United States, he is also a linguist of
several ancient and modern languages of Central Asia. The class will
feature slides and video from Dr. Kamberi's field experience and
archeological digs.
- About the Instructor:
Dr. Dolkun Kamberi graduated from the University of Nationalities,
Beijing, China, and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He has
participated in archaeological digs at various sites in Xinjiang, China.
Since 1977, he was a curator at the Museum and Archaeological Institute of
Uyghur Autonomous Region in Urumchi, Xinjiang prior to coming to the U.S.
His most important discovery came in 1985 when he found 3000-year-old
tombs with several mummified bodies of men, women, and an infant. He is a
member of the Uyghur ethnic group; they are one of the minorities in
China, but the dominant group in Xinjiang. Besides his native Uyghur, he
is fluent in Turkish, Uzbec, and several dead languages of Central Asia.
He is co-author of a book, author of about 40 articles in English, Chinese
and Uyghur. He is currently Visiting Research Scholar at the University
of Pennsylvania and consultant at the Los Angeles Museum of Natural
