Canadians welcome Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama will spend 18 days in Canada next month, stopping in Toronto,
Ottawa and Vancouver. The government of Canada, and of the three cities
and provinces he will be visiting have not extended an invitation to meet
with His Holiness. It is thought that this is due to our country's
official acceptance of China's illegal occupation of Tibet, and the fact
that the Chinese government frowns on all official endorsements of the Dalai
Lama and his government in exile.
This embarrassing situation seriously perturbed local resident John Dixon of
Wingham. He immediately sent off a letter to the Green Party of Canada
suggesting that their leader Jim Harris invite His Holiness to share some
time on his visit here. To his surprise and delight, the word came back
that the Green Party of Canada would be very pleased to host His Holiness,
and asked Mr. Dixon to arrange the details.
Dixon lost no time in extending the invitation, a copy of which is appended
below.

Hi Lesley,
My name is John Dixon, I am a supporter of the Green Party of Canada. I
read in our national newspaper, The Globe and Mail that His Holiness is
being officially snubbed by the various representatives of the Government of
Canada, due to our country's official recognition of China in Tibet.
While I am very sorry for this embarrassing state of affairs, I have been
instructed by the Chairman of the Green Party of Canada, Mr. Frank DeJong,
to invite His Holiness to a meeting or event of his choosing during his time
in our country. I feel quite certain that our people can organize a
non-partisan event, perhaps accompanied by a non-violent demonstration or
gathering which will focus attention on the position taken by our government
on Tibet.

possibilities at your earliest convenience. I understand that you will be
away from the office until next week. Would it be more expedient to contact
the New Delhi office to arrange details?
