Depending upon tone and all, it could mean all sorts of things but I'd suspect
"Blessing" is the most likely (given context).

As far as I have been told by the Thai around me, the syllabe Porn used in a
name means nothing, a bit like Dan means nothing in French and AFAIK Fraw
means nothing in English.
A nephew of my wife, working in the advertisement business, told me that his
boss recommends to his customers to avoid the syllabe Porn in latin alphabet
and to replace it by Pon or Poln whenever printing a business card, and ad
or a shop signboard.

"Pornthip"

A nephew of your wife probably has very little Thai education (may be he,
too, is a foreigner) if he does not know one of the most commomly used
words.
Excellent!
Not necessary a gift from heaven. For example, parents can give their
children a blessing.

If you parse the translation word by word like that, then, you get a
slightly different meaning.
A person who is gifted in playing musical instrument, for example, is said
to have porn-sawan in playing the instrument. I don't think we literally
mean he/she posesses the gift from heaven. We simply mean he/she is gifted.
?????????????? ????????????????????????????????? simply mean Mr. Dum is
gifted in deplomatic matter dealing with the hierarchy in Thai society.

Hey, VT, do a bit of homework before posting. I am a Farang living in
Bangkok with a Thai wife and get Thai family. Alll that has been posted many
times. The nephew is Thai, 25 yo from which he "only" spent 4 years in the
UK to graduate as a graphic designer.
So, I confirm that the Thai having the famours "Porn" in their name or
company name start to get the point and shift to Pohn, Pon or Poln.
As usual , verifiable truth did not verified anything.
VT, verify your pant zipper. If it is open, close it, I don't want you to

Many Thai words have their origin in Sanskrit language. For example,
the word "Thip" means extra ordinary good and can only be found
from the heavenly realm. Therefore, the name "Pornthip" the closest
English translation would be "Omniscient", or literally means
"Heavenly Vision".
Another example of a common Thai name which contain the word
"porn" is "Jiraporn". The word "Jira", if I remembered
correctly also has it origin from Sanskrit language, which means,
beautiful and happy. Hence, the word "Jiraporn" means "Heavenly
beautiful and happy".
Generally speaking, the name that contained the word "porn" is
usually used in conjunction with another word (usually use with another
noun).
However, when the word "porn" is used with a verb, it usually means
"blessing": for example, the word "hai porn", is explicitly
means "give blessing" or "Rub Porn" means "receive
blessing".
Noi
Daniel, you are making a fool of yourself here. I would give the 7 Thais in
your house a little more credit than your interpretation (i.e., I believe,
some how, the communications broke down, and they don't know what were you
talking about).
I am not criticize you or any foreigner for not knowing Thai langauge -- I
just try to tell you "what it is" from the perspective of a Thai.
In fact, I don't know if any Thai name that does bear some sort of meanings.
Unlike, the West, a person name (such as Bob, Dick, Ken, etc.) which may (or
may not) have any meaning, Thai names, in MOST cases, are associated with
some sort of meanings either taking from Bali or Sanskrit root. Names such
as Somporn, Pornchai, Pornthip, Pornthep, Siriporn, Patanaporn, and many
thousands more all have meanings. Thai surnames in particular, ALWAYS, bear
some sorts of meanings. People would go out of their ways to decorate their
last names with bagful of goods. That is why Thai last names are very
lengthy!
It's up to you if you don't believe me. If you want to make a fool out of
yourself -- do so. But please don't drag any other Thai for such reference.
Listen, this is NOT a contest of knowledge, as a Thai, I just try to get
this information straight.

I am a Thai, speak Thai for the past 40 years, graduated from Chulalongkorn
University (BS EE) and Rice University (MS EE). But what does that got to
do with this simple matter. Daniel, perhaps, educated scholars in this NG
(who in my view are qualified to teach Thai to Farangs) such as John
Sharman, Jopha, and Rinpoche could explain this simple fact to you.

If you were a Farang, I would consider you as a semi-troll, not to say a
troll.
But, if you really are Thai, you are one of those few Thai posters we have
here and I would really be pleased to see you posting in a constructive way.
I would jump on all your post and, even if disagreeing, replying in a
discussion way, not a polemical way.
And, just in case but you may know that already, most of the Farangs
dislikes agressive expressions and used them, in real life, only when they
consider it absolutely necessary. For those Farangs who know a bit Thailand,
they will not use that with Thai people except if they are first agressed,
with some exceptions, such as being verbally agressed by drunken Thais in a
bar: Don't reply, run away :-)
Cheers

Hi Khun Noi,
At last some Thai lights, thanks.
Plus the one of VT who is, as far as he wrote, also Thai (To my surprise)
and whose explanations are near from yours and, by the way, matching also
more or less the one of Sandy Cruden. So, case close from my end, except a
small question: Why several Thai people from my family and friends couldn't
manage to give me that sort of explanation and told that in a name or
surname Porn has no meaning?
Further to all the posts mentioned above, I wish to re-open my little
argument with them but your opinion would help not to look like toughly
teasing them, thanks.
Now, you wrote: I am a Thai woman and being lectured about the Thai language
by a bunch of "Farangs".
I am positively sure that the bunch of Farangs participating to that post
had no intention to lecture you not any of the few Thai posters we have at
SCT.
To the contrary, look at that bunch of Farang struggling and arguing between
themselves about your language, and ask yourself the question: Why they are
trying to improve their knowledge of your language?
Think about it, then smile and be proud when you will find why :-)

Thats a easy one. Most native speakers know less about there
language than people from abroad who have studied it. Native
speakers with low education arent always tha best ta explain
somethin about a language. Id have ta refer ta a book ta know
what tha meanins of english surnames or firstnames is. Actually
you can buy these books an tha women just love em. A lot of
women will tell ya all about there kids names cause they got em
outta some book that describes em in detail.

What would "Waraporn" mean?
Interestin! I also know a waraporn. Also a siriporn, jiraporn
and somporn. Siriporn though spells her name siripron but
pronounces it like it was siriporn. One of them silent 'r'??

Very few highly educated speakers of English can explain the meaning of common
first names and common family names used in English. And the vast majority of
those names do indeed have roots with meaning just as do most syllables in
multisyallabic Thai names.
What is commonly spelled as "Porn" in Thai names is, according to my trusty
Haas dictionary, still the definitive Thai-English tome, a word for blessings.

Perhaps, you are one of those Farangs who are accustomed to subordinate
Thais -- having a view of, some what, tone-down Thais who dare not look at
Farangs in the eyes, will always smile with a friendly face, and will say
"Yes" to whatever Farang's command. Sorry if I disappointed you.
Do you really believe most Thai people are so passive, simple minded, and
uneducated that way... ? Deep inside those, seemingly unsophisticated, Thai
folks, do you know what they really think of (and speak of) Farangs who
behave as if dollar$ could buy them all? Daniel, you don't want to know
because it will disappoint you... much more than my (according to you)
aggressive tone. I simply am a Thai who speak my mind -- what's wrong with
that? And what's wrong with having some of us Thai educated?
Yes, Thailand is still a fantasy land for those Farangs who glance at her
through a view of dollar$ sign.

Give me any name you want. And I will express my view the way a Thai feel.
For example, according to Fred Nurk -- CarLost is a Tight Tart who made a
big deal for saving a few bucks at the Zoo (BTW, he loves his donkey there
:). I happened to agree with Fred -- the asshole is a Tight Tart who flashs
his driver license begging for discount$. Some Farangs complain about being
charged for the entrance fee (I believe it is 200 Baht each) at Wat
Phrakaew. Damn it that is only 5 bucks! (a fraction of they paid for the
Disney Land entrance). Hey, my ancestors paid for such natural treasure
with our blood!

One of tha things ya learn about thais an there mai pen rai
attitude daniel is that they bottle all there emotions up. Dont
be near a thai when tha bottle bursts mate else youll be in fer

No, I don't believe, I have got some tense time already with some Thai
business partners as well as some arguments with my wife.
I also remember a difficult discussion with a computer shop owner who give
me back my PC repaired but with all my documents disapeared. He was thinking
that I was accusing him of thief, I was thinking he made a stupid
mistake...Tense, tense. We realised after this rather hot time that his
employee made a back up of all my stuff before performing the repair.
But all those "conflicts" went with both parties having maybe a very grin
face but a clean vocabulary and no shouting.
I can also state that school education has nothing to see with social
behaviour. One can be a PhD and act as a very rude chap while Nong Chai, the
owner of my preferred noddles stall, is a very well mannered gentleman with
whom I had several interesting conversations, with the help of my personal
translator.
> Yes, Thailand is still a fantasy land for those Farangs who glance at her

=============================
Fully agreed. You rightly wrote "for those Farangs". Please consider that
"those" are not "all".
And consider also that, maybe, the Farangs who settled in Thailand for good
are living here because they are fed-up of those guys and that style. Except
the Pattaya bar owners, for sure :-)

I am now used to pay more than my wife whenever we visit some places
together. I don't complain, 5 bucks as you said. But when I first discovered
that, I was surprised. Please, read it well, surprised, not furious. We
don't have that in the West. Discounted entrance fees at Museum, Zoos,
etc... are usually available for the students, the elderly, the handicapped,
etc... but that is whatever is their nationality. So, we are all surprised
and some find it discriminatory, grining at it without considering the real
cost. I can pay 200 Bahts, no problem but Nong Shai of my noddle stall
cannot afford it. He ask for 20 Bahts for a bowl of the best noddles of this
planet...
I wonder why the Authorities agrree to extend the Thai price to the Farang
who are living here full time. Maybe we are supposed to be poorer than the
Farang still living in Farangland?

If by "all" you mean all the Farangs, I have to say that you missed quite a
number of them.
Don't conclude with what you see of the tourists and the arsholes, there is
a 3rd category as mentioned above. Some of those 3rd category guys post

====================================
No, but the large majority of the Thai who become violent in public at
foreigners are drunk.
Raising you voice to stand on your argument is not violent unless violent
words are used for such.
Thai people, as all people in this world, can be violent.
As I have done everywhere, I tried to learn as quickly as possible what may
push a Thai to become violent, as the reasons differ from a culture to
another. Crimes for money or power not included in that.
Well, the sole Thais who had some verbal real violence at me were drunks,
one scary incident only after 2 years full time and 8 years part time in
Thailand.
By the way, this Thai attitude is part of the reasons who let me established
here.
My wife is for sure reason one, this attitude the No.2. I am here becasue of
the Thai people, not because of the beauty of the Thai landscape, on that
Malaysia and Vietnam can compete, not the business prospects, there also
some neighbours can compete.

Right. He has indicated that he completed a Masters degree at a U.S.

from a U.S. university but her english language writing skills are only
marginally better than Daniel's. Some people have more of a knack for learning

It's perfectly OK to disagree with some one . That don't deserve a

If I remembered correctly the word "Wara" has it roots in Pali language
means "chosen", hence, "Waraporn" means " Chosen by heaven". If I am
wrong please understand that I haven't been living in Thailand for such

It is for sure.
Where else can you obtain 420 Baht discount on a 500 Baht ticket?
For that money you can have 2 short times with a Thai girl and have a good
meal at the next noodle stall.
Yeeeeehaaw !!!!!
From the SCT archives:
Subject: Re: article about "student prostitution"
And of course the prositution culture of Thailand ( and this has nothing to
do
with visting Farangs) the focus upon massage parlors, teahouses (for the
Chinese), and outright brothels not to mention the ubiquity of mia nois
amongst
even the middle class has had no impact upon Thai youth.
So the young girl or boy in college figures that if it is OK for daddy to
squander the family's money on young lasses then perhaps I too should become
such a young lad or lass.
But no, not for our esteemed journalists at the Bangkok Post when it is just
so
much easier to avoid looking in the mirror and blame those western bastards
who
dare to be seen in public with hookers, of my gosh over the age of 21,
unthinkable to Thai men.

Subject: Re: Thailand residence permit
Well I suppose if you were the world's best golfer and your mother was a
Thai you would be be able to get one. AFAIK Tiger does not have one but
undoubtedly he could.
Then you might be an American billionaire married to a former Thai Miss
World called Pui. I've no doubt he would have residency if he wanted it.
You may be a world famous rock star recently married to a Thai girl. I
think Phil Collins may be able to get Thai residency if he so desires.
If your name is David Beckam you would get one delivered to your hotel 15
minutes after asking for it

I don't know why some Farangs should think it is a form a discrimination to
charge them, and not Thai citizens, the entrance fees to visit our national
treasures (Wat Phrakaew, for example). I wonder if those Farangs ever
realize that:
(1) Our ancestors had fought with their lives, loosing limps, and
sacrificing blood to protect our country and maintain those national
treasures -- our pride,
(2) We are the citizens who have the birth rights to our country and the
national treasures (just like you have the right to whatever you own in your
home),
(3) It is a duty of Thai citizens to protect their country -- either through
the draft process, national guard training (so-called "Rau Dau" as I served
during my highschool years and through the college years at Chula), or
through volunteering.
Perhaps, those Farangs who cry foul should ask themselves these questions:
(1) Had their ancestors ever fought for Thailand? (I don't mean the way the
British fought to take chunk of southern Thailand, or the way the French
fought to take chunk of north-eastern Thailand during King Rama V -- we lost
approximately one-third of land, forever!),
(2) Do they have any birth right to claim any freebie in Thailand?, and
(3) Do they have any obligation to sacrifice their lives and their children
lives for Thailand?
Daniel, to be honest with you, it is a privildge of Farangs that our
government granted them the opportunity to visit our national treasures on a
fee-paying basis. Why cry foul, if they think it is not worth it just don't
bother to visit -- go somewhere else. If CarLost thinks it is a ripped off
(i.e., he wants to assume the birth right of Thai citizen without serving
the civic duty), he is welcome to flash his god damn driver license begging
for discount$ in some other country, we don't need that kind of asshole
around.
Having said the above, they are many Farangs who behave appropriately and
graciously. And I do appreciate that -- Those Farangs are the honarable
guests of my country, and they are always welcome!

=================================
As you said, your land, your treasures, your right.
I took that little story of fees as reverse: we pay the right price to help
proper maintenance and conservation of the place, while the Thai citizens
get a subsidied price to give them easier access to those places that, at
then end of the day, belong to them.
But you will always have some foreign visitors who will take that as "being
abused", can't prevent it!
> Daniel, to be honest with you, it is a privildge of Farangs that our

=================================
Well, those places are also high on the list of the things to do and visit,
so helping in attracting more tourists to Thailand, hence boosting an
important sector of the Thai economy. It is a balance: I do not consider
that our government issued any privilege to the foreigners who can visit for
a fee the Eiffel tower in Paris, but if a visitor try to take away a bolt as
a souvenir, I would support to apply the Sharia and chop-off his right hand
:-)

*** It's a good question Khun Daniel, I have been asking the same
question since my last trip to Thailand, that why, my cousin, who's a
relatively well educated person and living in Thailand all her life,
yet, she can't read nor write some difficult Thai words.
My Thai language skills at this point is rusty at best because I have
been living abroad most of my life.
So, her I am, speaking English with Thai accent and speaking Thai with
English accent (I was told by my family and friends in Thailand that I
have English accent when I speak Thai), like a jack of all trades

The French and the British began their colonization madness of southeast
asia during the eighteenth century. The French took Laos, Cambodia and
Vietnam while the British took Burma and Malaysia. Thailand was, then, only
seen as a useful buffer state between these two crazy land-grabbers. In
order to maintain our freedom preventing us from being colonized by the two
bulldozers, King Rama V had to play a delicate deplomatic maneuver -- making
each the French and the British aware that we have had deplomatic &
assistance pact with their foe (e.g., the French and the British were then
not in groove with each other). Nevertheless, we had to cede to France the
following territories (nowaday parts of Laos and Cambodia):
(1) Sibsong Chuthai and Huapan Tonghok in 1886 - 1887,
(2) All the territories on the left bank of Mekong and all the islands in
the river in 1893,
(3) Paklai opposite Luang Prabang and Bassac (Champasak) in 1904, and
(4) Battambong, Srisophon and Siemrap in 1907.
Mean while, the British took Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Trengganu (nowaday
northern Malaysia) in a lob-sided land swap treaty with Thailand (i.e.,
under the British BIG gun, we traded part of Thailand claimed by the British
with those 4 provinces!).
For our freedom, we, the Thais, had lost approximately one-third of our land
to the French and the British during that period. And when they (the French
and the British) were kicked out from the region, we were left cold --
loosing these lands to Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia forever!!!
How would you feel if Thais were to give away southern France to German?
You may read this article to familiar yourself with Thai history during the
Bangkok (Rattana-Kosin) period:

Don't take my words for it since you are in Bangkok, you can do the research

Pardon moi for interrupting your southeast Asia beer chat. No mean to intrude;
just happen to stumble into the forum and found this " meaning of porn in Thai"
subject. Quite interesting there about the meaning of "porn". Btw, "porn or
phon" in Lao or Issan also means "blessing." At any rate, what is even far
more interesting is your view of Lao-Siam history above, which I find it totally
spurious.
1. Sibsong Chaotai and Huaphan were never a part of or belonged to Siam.
2. Paklai and Champassak were never a part of or belonged to Siam.
3. All the territories on the left bank of the Mekong and the islands in the
river were never a part of or belonged to Siam.
Your claim above is just absurd; it is no different from the Burmese's claim of
Ayudhaya a part of Burma. Are you willing to except the Burmese's claim of
Ayudhaya as part of Burma? If you are, then we will gladly accept your claim
that Laos belonged to Thailand.

How many lost their life fighting for the Phuket Zoo, you know that's

Looking at the places mentioned on the so called double pricing shame

Ever heard of the USA-Vietnam war, didn't the Thais at that moment in
time think Americans where fighting their war too to protect the Thais
from the commies? Isn't that why there were so many US bases in Thailand?
Following your line of thinking shouldn't at least the Americans be

From what i have been reading that claim really isn't that absurd.
"The lowland Lao historically lived on both sides of the Mekong, with
early Lao kingdoms encompassing much of the Khorat Plateau in present-day
Thailand. Cultural and linguistic differences between the Lao Loum and
the Thai Isan--what the Thai call the inhabitants of the Khorat Plateau
in northeast Thailand--were primarily due to the expansion of the Thai
state and influence in that region since 1945. Significant political
changes in Laos since 1975 also contributed to a growing cultural
distance."

Basically i have more trust in the info on sites like the above over
a piece of history written on a website of a gogo-bar in Phuket that
wants to pay tribute to Thai kings (VT posted the link as one source of

Well Freddie Kruger, I will give you an easy answer.
Show us the thread where I would have said that "I ferm my wife out fer a

If it are my words, the answer should be easy to find for a computer wizzard

If you can't, I will publish your lies every day in SCT, lying shitbag.

Here is an exerp of Laos Modern History under the Hold of Siam (Source: U.S.
Library of Congress):
****************************************************************************
***********************************************************
The Hold of Siam
This conflict had a long history. At the time of Siam's retributive
campaigns against Vientiane in 1827-28, relations between Vientiane and
Annam were good. The Vietnamese called Vientiane Van Tuong (the Kingdom of
Ten Thousand Elephants). But when Vientiane's ruler, Chao Anou, sought
refuge in Hu? following Siam's destruction of his capital, it caused serious
embarrassment to the Vietnamese. King Rama III of Siam wrote to the
Vietnamese emperor, Minh Mang, explaining that Chao Anou had refused
obedience to him and had started hostilities. Minh Mang, pursuing a
consistently cautious policy toward Rama III, lent Chao Anou two companies
of men to escort him back to Vientiane, instructing them to return
immediately after accomplishing their mission. Siamese and Vietnamese
sources--the Laotian primary sources having for the most part
disappeared--give conflicting versions of what happened next. In any event,
in mid-October 1828, Chao Anou found himself once again engaged in
hostilities with a stronger Siamese force. He again fled to safety, this
time to Muang Phuan because a Siamese force was encamped at Nakhon Phanom,
blocking the Mekong downstream.
The arrival of Chao Anou on their doorstep with a Siamese army in pursuit
confronted the leaders of Muang Phuan with a dilemma. When the Siamese
commander issued an ultimatum to surrender Chao Anou under penalty of an
attack on Xiangkhoang, the leaders of Muang Phuan quickly accepted. The
Siamese took Chao Anou to Bangkok and kept him captive.
What followed was illustrative of the consequences of the constant meddling
in each other's affairs that went on among the Laotian principalities. The
reigning prince of Muang Phuan was Chao Noi, son of the ruling family.
Vientiane had attempted to take advantage of Chao Noi's youth when his
father died to install Chao Xan, the head of a rival family from Muang Kasi.
The Phuan elders of Xiangkhoang refused to accept this candidate, so power
was shared under a compromise arranged with help from Hu?. Chao Xan,
however, led a delegation to Hu?, where he accused Chao Noi and his cousins
of bringing dishonor to the emperor by surrendering a vassal prince to
another king, of obstructing passage of a tribute mission from
Louangphrabang across the territory of Muang Phuan to Hu?, and of
negotiating to acknowledge Siamese suzerainty.
Chao Noi was accordingly summoned to Hu? to explain himself but sent his
eldest son, Po. Angered by this flagrant disregard of a direct order, Minh
Mang took no action, awaiting news of the fate of Chao Anou, who was the
nominal suzerain and ordinarily would have dealt with the Phuan on behalf of
Hu?. Once word was received that Chao Anou had died, Minh Mang sent a
Vietnamese detachment to Muang Phuan and arrested Chao Noi and most of his
family. In May 1829, the prisoners were taken to Annam, where Chao Noi and
his cousin were executed in January 1830. Chao Noi's young sons and their
mothers were kept in exile in Nghe An. The Muang Phuan succession thus fell
to Chao Xan. Minh Mang, however, posted a quan phu (commissioner), supported
by a garrison of 500 soldiers who were rotated seasonally, to reside
permanently at Chiang Kham (Khang Khay), at the headwaters of the Nam Ngum,
as a precaution against a recurrence of conflict with the Siamese king.
Rama III sent a further letter to Minh Mang in early 1829 outlining his view
of Chao Anou's treachery and thanking the emperor for his presents. But the
king failed to provide an explanation for a serious incident at Nakhon
Phanom in which three Vietnamese mandarins had been killed. In November
1829, Siamese envoys returned home with a letter from Hu? reiterating
earlier demands for punishment of those people responsible. When it became
obvious that Rama III would not revert to the old arrangement of joint
administration, Hu? gave administrative control over the entire eastern half
of the former kingdom of Vientiane to Vietnamese officials in Annam and
Tonkin. The territory was virtually annexed by Hu? in 1831 under the name
Tran Ninh Phu Tam Vien. The Vietnamese presence at Khang Khay continued
until the mid-1850s.
Chao Anou's wars with the Siamese had stirred massive disruptions of
villages on the right bank. Terrified Lao fled every which way. When the
Siamese arrived at Nakhon Phanom in 1827 they found the town deserted, the
officials having fled across the river to Mahaxai. In the aftermath of the
war, however, the Siamese established new towns--Chiang Khan, Nong Khai,
Mukdahan, and Kemmarat--at key points on the Mekong to serve as
administrative centers and as logistical bases for expeditionary forces
operating across the river toward the mountains.
On the left bank, where the writ of Siam ran as far south as Stung Treng,
the Siamese followed a policy of depopulating the country. This policy had
actually been initiated as early as 1779; the first Phuan carried off by the
Siamese arrived in Bangkok around 1792, where they were used as workers in
the fields of the official classes. By removing people from the left bank,
the Siamese deprived any invader from Annam of food supplies, transport, and
recruits. Sporadic resistance, however, led for some time by the latsavong
(first prince), of the old Vientiane kingdom continued at Mahaxai until
1835, when the leading Lao official there agreed to become governor of Sakon
Nakhon on the right bank, and the Siamese resettled there. From 1837 to
1847, the Siamese carried out depopulation raids annually during the dry
season in Khamkeut and Khammouan and in the valley of the X? Banghiang.
Entire Lao villages were uprooted.
Meanwhile, the leaders of Houaphan principality, fearing that the example of
Muang Phuan might be applied to them, submitted to the suzerainty of Bangkok
through the intermediary of Louangphrabang. Events were not going well for
the Siamese in Muang Phuan. After the Siamese removed Chao Xan and some of
the elders to Bangkok in 1836, the Vietnamese in effect ruled the state
directly, appointing local officials as administrators. The depopulation
activities the Siamese carried out on the Plain of Jars and elsewhere in
Xiangkhoang caused the remaining population to migrate eastward and
southward, forming new villages in the upper reaches of the Nam Mat and
around the northern extremities of the Nam Kading basin, around Muang Mo,
Muang Mok, and Muang Ngan. This expansion of the Phuan state was encouraged
by the Vietnamese in their administrative reorganization. Some of the Phuan,
however, perhaps enticed by Lao governors acting for the Siamese, moved down
the river valleys toward the Mekong. There, new towns such as Bolikhamxai
and Pakxan were founded and given satellite status by the Siamese in the
1870s.
Tu Duc, on his accession as Vietnamese emperor at Hu? in 1847, allowed the
sons of Chao Noi to return home with their families and to reestablish
Xiangkhoang as the Phuan capital. They were given administrative
responsibilities and the eldest, Prince Po, at last was permitted to replace
the commissioner. Meanwhile, King Tiantha Koumane of Louangphrabang (r.
1851-69), one of three sons of Manta Thourath who succeeded to the throne in
succession, while in Bangkok to receive the investiture, quickly arranged
with the new Siamese king, Rama IV, to become once again the suzerain over
the Phuan state. The Vietnamese had no objection to vassal relations of the
Phuan with Louangphrabang. But Rama IV was deeply suspicious of the Phuan
elders and set as a condition for accepting this arrangement that the Phuan
send an annual tribute mission to Louangphrabang. Tiantha Koumane hence was
able to reestablish his authority over Muang Phuan.
A new element--the H?--entered the picture, further complicating the
situation in northern Laos. The H? first appeared in mid-1869 in the upper
valley of the Nam Ou, where they made common cause with some Lu dissidents
displaced from the Sipsong Panna during a civil war lasting twenty-five
years. An army from Louangphrabang attacked these bands and withdrew with
prisoners.
The Lao and Siamese were ill prepared to face up to the new danger of
anarchy in their domains. Tiantha Koumane was dying of malaria, and the
Siamese, preoccupied with preparations for the cremation of their own
monarch, Rama IV, demanded that a tribute mission from Louangphrabang arrive
in Bangkok in time for the ceremony. Many princes and senior officials had
to absent themselves from Louangphrabang at this critical time and had to
remain in Bangkok afterward for audiences with the new monarch. Oun Kham,
who was already fifty-eight years old, did not receive his crown from the
Siamese until 1872.
It was not until 1873 that the Siamese sent an army up the Nam Ou to attack
the H? and drive them out. Some H? retreated into Houaphan, while others
overran the Plain of Jars, where Chao Hung had succeeded his brother Chao
Pho as ruler of the Phuan state, which became the main theater of conflict.
The H? camped at Chiang Kham and demanded "tax" payments from the local
population, threatening to kill anyone who resisted. Chao Hung raised a
small army and led it to assist the beleaguered governor of Chiang Kham in
1874, but a fatal bullet wound prompted the withdrawal of his army. Chao
Hung's son, Prince Khanti, appealed to Annam for aid. A joint attack was
made on Chiang Kham but was also repulsed.
Early the following year, the H? began plundering the lowlands along the
Mekong as far upriver as Chiang Khan and as far south as Nakhon Phanom,
directly threatening Siam's security. The teenage King Rama V was unable to
mount an effective response. The governor of Khorat took a force of men
across the flooded Mekong at the height of the monsoon and attacked the H?
encamped in the ruins of Vientiane, killing their warlord and forcing the
others to retreat to Muang Phuan. A concerted campaign against the H? in
their stronghold was finally put in motion in 1876, but it resulted more in
pillaging and looting the inhabitants than in stopping the H?, who, with
their horses, were more than a match for the Siamese and Lao foot soldiers.
Rama V blamed the Phuan for having brought trouble on themselves by giving
rice, silver, and horses to the H?, which in fact they had done in a
desperate effort to appease them. He rejected further appeals for aid on the
grounds that the local leaders would prove incapable of dealing with the
situation after the army withdrew.
Meanwhile, the troubles in the upper valley of the Nam Ou continued. Siamese
commissioners had to assist Oun Kham in restoring order in 1876 and to prod
him into reorganizing the towns under his rule. Affairs remained in a state
of flux for the next six years, and when in late 1882 Oun Kham appealed
again to Bangkok for help against the H?, the Siamese sent a major military
mission. Subsequently, the Siamese maintained a permanent garrison at
Louangphrabang.
The Eviction of Siam
The French, meanwhile, had imposed a treaty of protectorate on Annam in
1884. This treaty implied a French interest going beyond exploratory
involvement in the affairs of Laos. In June 1885, the French consul general
in Bangkok notified the Siamese government that a vice consulate would be
established in Louangphrabang under terms of a most-favored-nation clause
contained in a Franco-Siamese treaty of 1856. A new Franco-Siamese
convention of May 1886 acknowledged the role of Siamese officials in Laos
for the conduct of administrative matters but avoided implying French
recognition of Siamese claims to sovereignty there.
Auguste Pavie arrived at Louangphrabang in 1887 to assume his post as vice
consul. Pavie played a key role in saving Oun Kham's life from raiders from
Lai Chau, earning the king's gratitude and a promise that he would place his
kingdom under France's protection. Incidents between Siamese and French
officials on the left bank, where the French had made themselves advocates
of Vietnamese claims to suzerainty, continued in 1887-93. Finally, in March
1893, the French government, acceding to a campaign by the colonial lobby in
Paris, decided to send three French commissioners, each with a small armed
force, to evict the Siamese from outposts they had established in central
and southern Laos. The commissioners had secret orders to avoid exchanges of
fire if at all possible; ironically, the Siamese were under identical orders
from their government.
The French government dispatched two warships to the Gulf of Siam, and, in
what became known as the Paknam incident, forced the passage of a fort at
the mouth of the Menam River on July 12 and anchored in the river with their
guns trained on the royal palace. On July 20, the French gave an ultimatum
to the Siamese government to recognize the rights of Annam to the left bank
territories and to meet a list of other demands within forty-eight hours.
The Siamese replied on July 22, accepting the first demand in central and
southern Laos but rejecting the rest. The French declared a blockade of
Bangkok, whereupon the Siamese accepted the rest of the French demands. By
terms of the treaty concluded on October 3, 1893, between the Government of
the French Republic and the Government of His Majesty the King of Siam, Siam
renounced all claims to territories on the left bank and to islands in the
river.

True. Ayudthaya was ransacked by the Burmese twice. But, each time,
without interference from the outside influence, Ayudthaya regained its
independent by beating back the Burmese:
First Time: Upon the declaration of indepedence, King Naresuan the great
killed the Burmese crown Prince in the historic elephant duel at Nhong
Sarai, Supanburi on 25 January 1592. Subsequently, during his reign, King
Naresuan paid Burmese the same courtesy by ransacked Burmese towns. The
Burmese King, Nanthabureng, had to fled Hongsawadee to TongAu. To deprive
Ayudthaya from the satisfaction of capture its capital city, he burnt down
Hongsawadee ahead of the arriving Naresuan troop. King Nanthabureng was
subsequently murdered by other Burmese tribal during his refuge in TongAu.
During King Naresuan reign, nearly all Burmese satellite states including
Laos voluntarily became Ayudthaya's satellite states.
Second Time: Phrachao Taksin fought back the Burmese, and regained the
independence in 1767 within 7 months after the fall of Ayudthaya. During
the Bangkok period (the present day Chakri dynasty), Burma was in the
decline. King Rama-I mobilized his troop and, once again, paid the Burmese
the same courtesty by ransacking many Burmese towns along the west coast
gaining significant territories from the Burmese. Since then, the Burmese
had never again became any factor or influence in the region.
Khun Phainam, that was the history. Regardless of what it was, at the
present day, We (Thai and Laos) are neighbor. And I wish you and your
country the best!

> States belonged to them as well. Right?
>

No, i'm inclined to think the (territory that's now part of the) United
States belonged to the different indian nations:)
If the British were to claim they once colonized the "United States" i
wouldn't argue with that.
From what i have been reading so far, most writers seem to agree that
Thailand did colonize Laos (and some argue that Thailand in the process
gained some territority), not the other way around.
Noi do you think that what i quoted from this source
http://countrystudies.us/laos/49.htm is (excuse moi le mot)bullshit?
Nick
I carefully read that interesting piece and it seems that, in fact, the
regions we are talking about were "vassals" of the King of Siam.
So, what the French have done is to replace that vassal link by
colonisation.
It does not excuse colonisation but at least relieved me a bit for the first
impression I had, i.e. my forefather stealing pieces of Siamese land. They
"only" had stolen pieces of Siamese power on the regions surrounding Siam.
Seemingly same sort of events in the South were the British imposed their
protectorate on Sultanates that were not Siamese but previously reporting
also to the King of Siam.
If I got all that more or less right, Siam was the regional superpower when
the colonialists arrived. The whole area was colonised with the exception of
the former superpower who managed to stay free, thanks to King Rama V.
With usual reservation re. my correct understanding, corrections welcomed.
Cheers
Daniel

A lot of SCT'rs joined the thread about "2 priced tears" and complained
about this.
They didn't hide behind all ways to avoid to have to pay the "2 prived

| Heading3
| You might find a different "thruth" there."
Indeed....
The heading 3 is about French colonisation and I knew about it.
But the heading 2, the one that elaborate about the Siamese colonisation of
Laos is, as you said, a slightly different truth.
So, back to my original belief:
The local wolf, Siam, was once upon a time expelled from Laos by a bigger
wolf, France.
All at the cost of the Lao sheep....and one wonder why they became commies
:-((
Meanwhile, another bigger wolf, UK, expelled the Siamese wolf from Kelantan
and other Malayan Sultanates.
Siam managed to keep the Patani Sultanate and fully integrated it into the
Kingdom.
We may wonder today if it was a good decision as, a century later, they are
still not fully "integrated" it seems.
Cheers
Daniel
I don't think you quite understand the history of the region. Thais and
Laos were both migrated from southern China. Is it, then, for anyone to say
both Thai and Laos do not belong in the southest asia region?
Another example -- Ancient Malaysia. Negrito aborigines are considered the
first group to inhabit the Malaysian peninsula. And when the Proto-Malays
arived from southern China, with more technological advance, they drove the
Negritos into the jungles and hills. After the Proto-Malays, came the
Deutero-Malays, mixture of Proto-Malays, Indians, Siamese and chinese
(present day Malays). Now, you tell me who own the Malay peninsula!
Another example, yet, Burma. Burma was then fragmented with more than a
dozen tribal groups (Burmese, various Mons, and various Karens) that were
constantly fighting each other. It wasn't until King Nanda-Bayin who was
able to put down all the rivalries uniting Burma into a powerful state. And
after his death, the Burmese were again fragmented.
The reality is, the way of life in that region, then was governed by
power -- with a powerful ruler owned number of vassal satellites. Khmer was
unquestionablethe early dominant ruler in southest asia. Then, came
Nanchao, Sukothai, Ayudthaya, Hongsawadee (Burma), Ayudthaya, TongAu
(Burma), and toward the modern era -- Siam Kingdom (in Bangkok period), the
undisputed ruler in the nineteenth century. It was this modern era when
lands and borders had become internationaly recognized. And it was this
time that the France and
British made the interfence with the intention of colonization!

I was just wondering how you came to that conclusion, i'm not familiar
with Lao names. By now i know that Phainam actually is another (old) name
for Vientiane.
If you want to read a bit more about Laos history, this site might
interest you (it's in french and has some simple maps)

Not only the intention, the complete will I am afraid :-((
You know, European early history is also a large mix of tribal movements.
Take early France: Gallic people, a celtic group, originally. Then came the
Roman, the Germanic tribes (Ostrogoths, Wisigoths, Francs, etc..) then the
Huns, then the Vikings, then the English. The invasions stopped there but
migratory flows kept on: Italians, Polish, Spaniards, Portugueses, name it,
and eventually the migrations from our former colonies, Vietnam, Laos,
Cambodia, Africa and North Africa.
See: 5 lines to define the French... what a cocktail!
Same everywhere. For the record, the King of Spain is of French ancestors,
the Bourbon family of our own French Kings... Maybe we can have a claim on
Spain, what do you think, Carlos :-)
But our original topic was the modern history of Siam/Thailand, 19th and
20th century.
I google a bit about the Laos history, but looking for documents in French,
easier for me.
Not from France, we may have a biased view, but from Canadian Universities.
See also the link posted by Nick, interesting.
In brief, what they all say match my little impression: The Kingdom of Siam
was the regional superpower
before the arrival of the colonialists. A large central Kingdom surrounded
by smaller Kingdoms, Principalities and Sultanates that were not Siamese but
vassals of the King of Siam.
It is all those vassals States that the colonialists took away from Siamese
influence. Not Thai soil, at least in the modern definition of Thai soil. A
bit like if Australia was taking away New Caledonia from French influence.
That's not French soil in my definition.
Once again, not an excuse to justify colonialism.
And all the efforts of your PM to become a leading regional figure shows
that he is trying his way to reverse back that loss of regional power now
that the colonialists are gone, leaving behind few leftover like me :-).
Cheers

Hi Daniel,
I can read your text in Thai letters. You seem to be the only one with
the correct encoding for my newsreader. Quite strange!
Regards,
Mort
This is a total mystery for me.
And, BTW, I got the Thai fonts at random, sometime the real one, sometime
the garbled stuff.
I wish to get some clarification on that, if somebody can help.
I would like to systematically get the proper Thai fonts so that I can ask
Mia Leuang to read it for me.
My PC is set to accept Thai fonts.
Cheers

Show us the thread where I would have said that "I short time the little

Come on Freddie Kruger, you have been proven to be a lying shitbag twice

You are making too much lies in a short time.
I love this situation.
If you can prove your lies with a link, people will belive you.

Jalern, don't say that in front of a cambodian. They always claim that
the current esan region, and most of laos and thailand, used to belong
to them and the angkor empire for hundreds of years before the tai
(current thai and lao) invaded them from the north and took the land
away from them. At least they have some points to their claim here
because of the presence of today khmer-style temples and ruins still
left in the southern part of esan and laos (champassack). Also, if you
go to the southern part of esan from champassack toward khorat, most of
those people are typically non-thai non-lao, but rather of khmer
origin. The lao-people in esan are mostly found in the northern part of
easan.
noiy (don't confuse with khun noi, the thai lady)
Again, I don't think you quite understand the historic way of living and
governing of the region. I will try this one more time and move on to
something else:
In the olden days, people (tribals) in that region, at any one time, were
governed by a handful of powerful rulers. There were not particular hard,
physical boundaries internationally recognized that said... this belongs
Thai, this belongs Burma, or this belongs Laos or Khmer, etc. During
Sukothai period for example, Sukothai was considered the supreme regional
ruler of the nearby tribal regions (Ayudthaya and Chiangmai, for example,
were considered vassals of Sukothai). There were not really any provincial
governing structures of what we know in the present modern days. And when
Sukothai declined it became a vassal of Ayudthaya. You've got the picture?
The rulers during the olden days exerted their regional influence by sending
or appointing people of choice (typically, royal family members or loyal
generals) to rule their vassal states. And the vassal states were no
dummies, sending their princess or royal family members to wed with the
regional ruler in hope of gaining future influence with the family ties.
One can say, things like this were sort of the governing structure of the
olden time. Happy periods can go on for tens or even hundred of years until
the vassal states strayed... usually by either the influence of other nearby
regional rulers or, they became so strong (like Ayudthaya topping of
Sukothai) wanting to be the regional ruler themselves. That's when the
regional war broke out. You've got the picture now? That was the way of
regional governing structure, then.
And like any other tribals in the region, the Thais were a full
participation of this (sort of) governing structure at the time -- our
existence was dependent on how well we struggled with the process. To
compare the colonization of the region by French and the British to the way
governing structure there is a far fetch! If it would make you feel better,
then, why don't you lump or compare all other French colonization (countries
in Africa and Haiti for example) to this regional governing structure.
You are quite right in your quotation above: "Not only the intention (of
colonization by the French), but the completion I am afraid :-(( ... "
And may I also add to your quotation of the REAL completion -- the French
were disgracefully kicked out of the region... in a REAL humiliation :-((
....

Not at all, just saying the truth.
But that's an unknown word to you.
You have been a lying shitbag all along, and have been asked to show the

You are uneducated (your own words) and stupid as well.

Fred, you have a good sense of humor (though, strong accent even in
writing!) and seemingly sincere. I am sure a person with a big heart (Jai
Kwang) like yours would have friends everywhere in Thailand. May be if they
get to know you better, people in my country won't even call you a "Farang",
but rather a Foreigner like some of those respectable Japaneses, Koreans,
Australians, Europeans, Americans, and etc.
Don't worry about that Tight Tart who wants to assume the birth right of
Thai citizens, thinking that he is entitled to all the public freebies
available to Thai citizens -- flashing his god damn driver license
everywhere to beg for discount$.
I visited Kanchanaburi with my friend last year. We stopped at a restaurant
there (on the skirt of the city) on our way back. During the meal, I
noticed that there were 3 back-pack farangs standing outside the restaurant
near our SUV (They seemed to either need help or lost their way). After the
meal, I went to ask if they need help. They told me that they would like to
get to Bangkok, and would offer me 500 Baht for the service. I told them to
get in my SUV, and off we went. We made another stop for dinner. I asked
the three to join us for dinner, but they said they were not hungry. But
when I told them the "dinner is on me", then, they agreed to join me and my
friend for the dinner. Boy, if they were not hungry then I don't know "what
is"! I had to order 2 extra tubs of fried rice and many bottles of Sigha.
After the dinner, the three seemed relax and talkative. I learned that they
are dutch and are touring Thailand on a tight budget.
I dropped them off once we got to Bangkok, and I told them to forget about
the 500 baht. Boy, aren't they happy! They kept thanking me and my friend
in broken English.
The point of telling this experience is that, in general, Thai people who
"have" the resources are generous enough to extend they hands to help
foreigners in needs. But let me tell you this, we don't care much for any
Tight Tart Farang who wants to assume the birth right of Thai citizens,
thinking that he is entitled to all the public freebies available to Thai
citizens.

Hi VT,
I will not comment re. your disappreciation of Carlos, I carefully keep
myself out of those polemics nowadays.
Only my 2 satangs re. the generosity of the Thai people.
When I came here originally, I was almost broken and started my little
business from scratch. Tough time.
1 - My owner of that time, Khun Tirayut, gave me 6 months at half the agreed
monthly cost "to help my new business" (Quote).
2 - One of my first customers, Khun Somchai, asked me when the job was done
if I believed my initial price was correct. I got scared of a last minute
discount bargain. You have to know that I am not selling goods but services,
based on my long experience in a technology not yet well known in Thailand.
So, I tried to get out of that with something like "Well, a signed contract
is a signed contract". He understood my fear, smiled and says "No, no, I
checked with a friend in a similar business and he told me that your fees
are too low". This gentleman understood on the way that I was struggling,
giving discounts as badly in need of work and I got a nice "bonus" at the
end.
None were known to me nor to my wife before that, none are from the family,
none had any rational reasons to help. They knew I was struggling, they knew
I have a Thai family, both are rather wealthy, that's all.
Try in France :-(((
By the way, VT, I start getting Seasons's Greetings cards from Thai
companies. But would a Thai individual with whom I don't have business
relationship but purely personal relationship be surprised to get some
Seasons's Greetings cards from a foreigner? Thanks for a tip.
Cheers
Daniel
Most of tha thais I know call me loong. They look on me as a
uncle. They useta call me missus yai.

Yep, seen a lot of them types of tourists. I guess its one way
ta see tha country. I prefer upmarket hotels meself these days.
Had enough of doin it rough on some of tha worksites we useta be
at. Gettin soft in me old age Id reckon. Like in bangkok now Id
want a decent hotel near all tha facilities an transport. Learnt
last christmas when I had me first real holiday fer 20+ years
that these days in bangkok ya need a hotel near where ya want ta
be. To hard gettin a taxi fer anythin other than a really short
distance. Tha skytrain is brillaint an I guess tha subway will
be to. I stayed fer some of me time in bangkok at tha pathumwan
princess. Nice hotel, had a 4 room suite all ta meself. Tha rest
of tha time I was stayin either at me thai mates family home or
friends places in diffrent parts of thailand. Covered a bit of
territory in tha time I was there. Bangkoks changed heaps but
out in tha countryside it aint changed to much. Better roads is
tha most noticeable thing I could see. But then Im biased cause
roads an bridges useta be me business back in tha 70s.

Helpin people is a good thing. Dont it really blow there minds
when ya tell em ya dont want anythin fer ya trouble! Dont know
what its like ta be them backpackers but. Never travelled on a
tight budget, always had an expense account. Just book it up ta
tha firm. Only way ta travel. Picked up quite a few backpackers
when they was hitchhikin round tha place here in aus. See some
of em in really remote out of tha way places. Dunno how they
cart those bloody great backpacks around all tha time to. Shit,
thatd kill me back after a few hours let alone a few weeks. One
of tha things I liked about helpin out backpackers was they
always got intrestin storys ta tell.

Most of tha thais I know are well of. When I first got ta know
em back in tha 70s they was either strugglin civil engineers or
low level public service bods. All of em have done well an are
up in the top ranks of their profesions now. I useta help em out
a lot back in tha old days an all of em, ta a man, want ta repay
that ta me now. Hey I never kept score ;-) They was good mates
then an they still good mates now. Thats tha important thing ta me.

Would it hurt? Some of them thais I know send me chritmas cards
an they be bhuddist. That reminds me. Gotta send tha last of me
cards of tomorrow. Sent all tha overseas ones of a week or three
back. Tha last are just local round tha city here. This is tha
sorta stuff I cant farm out ta tha secretary. Gotta have tha
personal touch. About a hundred on me list now. Useta be more
when me missus did em. Been a few of the recipients fallin of
there perch lately. Old age catchin up with em I reckon.
Send em daniel. Thais like em just like evryone else. Just
remember tha list can get bloody long. Ya could be makin a rod

There are as many versions of history as nations because history is
used everywhere for political propaganda. Each country in SEA has its
own version of historical events that supports its national pride.
The real problem about these differences is not only intellectual but
that they can lead to violent anti-Thai feelings among the
neighbouring countries, like the riots in Cambodia six months ago.

True Verifiable Bastard.
But that;s because Thai's like you are at the same level of him, UNEDUCATED

Educated Thais may have another opinion on Fred and you.

Think about, being allowed to enter the zoo for which your ancestors have

No, Verifiable Bastard, I am Spanish with Spnish blood in my heart and I

I don't even want anybody to compare me with a Thai.
When I see the Thai's killing eachother or fahrangs for a few bucks, selling
their young female children for a few bucks, ripping of people for a few
bucks, having a lot of mia-noi's but beating their own wives, and so
on......... I am proud not to be a Thai.

Yeah, like you served ever any civic duty.
How much did your parents paid for getting you out of the civic duty?
Everything is for sale in Thailand.

I am not allowed to consume any alcohol by my Thai doctor (well, my European

Nevertheless, when it is time to pay the bill, I will "flash" my Thai driver

Again, changing pronouns shows you level of education (or better said your

You are the one who was pimping the Nana hookers.

You even wrote that you have to inspect their "machines" (read "pussies")

My point is this, you can't judge history out of it own time and event.
We can't use our today morality standard to judge the event that
