A swedish company Boletica with its freezing plant GÖSTA APPELKVIST FRYSERI
AB offered many thai people to come to Sweden and earn a lot of money by
picking berries for the canning industry. Many of the people who were
thinking they were going to make big bucks over there took loans, sold loved
belongings to obtain money for their trip costing approx 950 USD.
The thaipickers were offered a monthly payment of 1500 USD if they were
fulfilling their quota of 55kg or 80 litres per day by picking
blueberry, lingonberry or cloudberries. They were supoosed to work for three
months. What they did not know was that even the local swedish people who
knows where to go and get the big quantities of berries cannot meet the
quota. How would the thai people, many poorly equipped stranded up in the
cool mountain region of Vemdalen,Harjedalen in Sweden where night
temperatures even in swedish summer of July can dip below freezing , manage
during this conditions. Additionally to this, the wheater was very bad, lots
of rain and a really poor season for fruitpicking.
When the thai realized that they were not going to make any money (they had
their return flights booked for November when the snow in Vemdalen lies one
meter deep) they quit their job. Many without any money at all, some got
some lousy 100 USD for two months work..
The thai reported to the police, who are investigating. The employers
reported to the immigration which led to the thais had to leave immideatly.
Whitout chance to even make any money with them back home to Thailand where
their even bigger debts and lost savings were awaiting.
This has been reported in many swedish newspapers and TV
