I am a Thai wife of a British citizen. I live and work in England and am
considering applying for British Citizenship.
Can anyone tell me whether doing so will affect my Thai nationality. I want
to retain my Thai passport because I hope to return to live in Thailand.

Thank You,
Thongleun

From my knowledgement, do not change your citizenship if you expect to
return home. In my case, I remain continue my Thai ID, passport.
Also, keep my name be listed in my parent house registration. If you
change your citizenship, you may have to apply your visa when you want
to visit home.

Anyway, even though we do not change the citizenship, marry with a
foreigner, we do not have rights to buy property (land).

At the moment, there is an issue that the government may allow a wife
to keep her lastname if married. The result does not come out yet.
Hopefully, we will be able to have the rights to choose.

It is best not to rely on casual newsgroup replies for such an
important tactical decision. The official reply (actually,
administrative or interpretive: "official" depends on the letter of the
law) appears on the Thai Embassy (Washington, DC) web site:

More details appear at:

http://www.thaiembdc.org/consular/con_info/con_inf.htm

including a specific table showing "who are Thai nationals".

In general, the decision should depend on your own intention, and the
interests of any children you may have or who may be born to you. Since
your Thai nationality is not at risk, and since Britain is unconcerned
with whether you have another nationality, you should think of European
Union rights. If you are much younger than your husband you might want
to think of the rest of your life: once you return to Thailand, you
risk losing your unlimited leave to remain in Britain if you are deemed
to have abandoned your ordinary residence there. With British
nationality that could not happen; furthermore you would have the right
to live and work in any EU country -- and your dependents (parents
included -- except, ironically, in Britain where you would have
British, not EU rights).

All very complicated. Rely on official, written policy only. Even oral
statements by consular officials are notoriously unreliable.

Reams of official red-tape snipped:

Forget all this official crap. The real situation is this: If
you apply for, and gain, British citizenship, this will not affect
your Thai citizenship at all. Just carry on applying/renewing Thai
passports as normal as if you did not have British citizenship.

The British authorities have no jurisdiction over Thai
authorities and vice-versa. Ignore what you read in official
documents, the above statement will always be true.
