I was listening to the local Indian radio station a yesterday when I suddenly
heard a song sung by the renowned Carnatic vocalist, ML Vasanthakumari. But
that was not the point, the song was "Konjum Puraave" (dunno which movie) and
it was THE SAME as "Thandi Hawaayen" by Lata. Earlier I'd also heard a Tamil
version (sung by I think AM Rajah and ??) of "Maang Ke Saath Tumhaara" (Rafi
and ??). I've heard such tunes many times before. It makes me wonder if just as
now ppl like Anand Milind, Nadeem S, Anu Malik etc. copy tunes from Tamil films
and port them onto Hindi films, was the revers happening in the late 50s, 60s
period ? Anyone to clarify ?

Other such songs heard : Tamil version of "Chaahe Koi Mujhe Junglee" sung by
S.Janaki, Tamil version of "Jaayen To Jaayen Kahaan" sung by 'Sirkazhi'
Govindarajan !

Yes, the flow was definitely southbound in the 60's...I might be wrong ,
but a lot of songs by A.M.Raja are not original...The tunes were lifted from
Hindi....I believe it was a unwritten rule that each movie must have atleast
one song with a popular Hindi tune. MSV was supposedly an exception to this...
other songs that come to my mind now are

Tasveer tere dil mein (Rafi + Lata...movie Maya) is
Nilavo .....not sure , rendered by by TMS

O mere sonarE.....(Rafi+ Asha, Teesri Manzil )
Nerukku Ner...bla bla.....from some Jaishankar movie

Dil pukarE, aare, aare...(Rafi +Lata , JewelThief)
Naanaththaale, kangal minna minna ...or something like that...again, a Jai movie

Jab Jaag uthE armaan......(Hemanth, Bin baadal Barsaat)
do not remember the Thamizh lyrics......

That's all i can remember now....but there are tons more, i am sure

"Naina Barse" by Lata became "Naane Varuven" by PS I guess. "Naane Naana"
is not even close to that tune. This song came much later and is from the
film "Azhage Unnai Aradhikkiren".

yeah, there are plenty more of such songs, even in more recent times.

khilte hain gul yahan from sharmeeli - Radhaiyin nenjame .....
sapna mera toothth gayaa from khel khel mein? - don't remember the tamil
lyrics.

There is a Hindi song with the same tune as the tamil song "konji konji
pesi mathi ...."

The song "Yenni yenni parka manam inbam kondaathuthe.." has a similar tuned
song in Hindi..I only remember the line after this "pehli mulaaqaat hai yeh
pehli mulaaqat hai"

Yes there are. Most of Jai movies from Modern Theatres had "Veda" as the
music director. He was notorious for "lifting Hindi tunes". You could pick
any Modern Theatres movie in that era and will find Hindi tunes.

HI!
Some of the songs made into Tamil from Hindi (or vice-versa)
1. Gore Gore, from Samadhi, composed by C.Ramachandra. In Tamil, it was
Aiyya saami......
2. Qusoor aapka from Bahar, composed by S.D.Burman. In Tamil, it goes
Onakkaage, ellam onakkaage
3. Jhoome jhoome dil mera, from Poonam, composed by Shankar-Jaikishen. I
don't know the equivalent in Tamil.
4. Meethi meethi baaton se, from Qaidi # 911, composed by Dattaram. In
Tamil, it is Konji konji......
5. Appalam, appalam, from Azad, composed by C.Ramachandra. I don't know
the equivalent in Tamil, though the movie is Malai Kallan.
6. Chotti si yeh zindagani, from Aah, composed by Shankar-Jaikishen. I
don't know the Tamil version.
Of the above, I think only #4 was first released in Tamil, the
others being lifted from Hindi.
More later,
Vinod

Bahar was n't first released in Hindi, but Tamil and Telugu. The music
director for the original Tamil/Telugu version (simultaneously made like most
of the AVM films) was R. sudarSanam.

Yes, Azad is an original Hindi production. I am n't aware of the Tamil
version you mentioned above. But, the same tune was later copied by
ghanTasaala in "maayaa bazaar" (1957, Azad was released in '55, right?).

Aah was dubbed in to Telugu and Tamil in the same year, i.e., 1953 by Raj
Kapoor himself. It was considered as a "test" film to enter in to the BIG
south-Indian film market. In Telugu it was released under the title "prEma
lEkhalu" (=Love letters), and did n't do well at the box office, though
all the nine songs were big hits, sung by A.M. raajaa, and jikki. The tunes
were the same Hindi ones. These nine songs today are collectors items. So,
the failure in south India put a break for Raj Kapoor's (ambitious ?) plans
and he never made/dubbed a film in to south Indian languages himself. Could
some one tell me who was the dialogues and lyrics writer for Tamil version.
In Telugu it was the well known poet "aarudra", who made a good name with
that film. BTW, the above Mukesh solo goes like "paaDu jeevitamO yavvanammO
moonnaaLLa bratukOyi ..." in Telugu. Would like to know all the nine songs in
Telugu :-)!

Sreenivas

Absolutely - this song only.

Thanks for starting off the song. A really cute song in both languages.

As far as I remember, "Ilaya nila" is not from "Ninaivellam Nithya"
which starred Karthik and GG. "Ilaya nila" was sung by SPB as background
for Mohan.
