This is the continuvation of Tamil Novel Writers. I already started the
thread for Historical Novelists. I also put a posting about Rajendrakumar
who died recently died.
Now I am going to continue with other Social Novelists. This include
Social, Detective, Scifi etc.
First, I am not write about Jayakanthan which is already in progress by
Mr.Sankaran. He knows about Jayakanthan than me.I am also not going to
write about the yester year novelists/writers like Pudhumaipithan,
Vi.Mu.Kodhainayagi.
This time I am going to discuss about Tamizhvaanan.It will be continue
about other writers too.
When you talk about Tamizh, then the name come to mind is Thamizh
Vaanan.Realy he was a good Tamil Novelist. He normaly used Tamil names in
his Novels, except the name Sankarlal. He wrote all kind of novels. He was
"Master Of All Subjects". He had a series "Sankarlal", which is now
continued by his son "Lena" and Raveendar (I don't know is this pal name
of Lena or another son. His novel "Manimozhi Unnai Marapadhepadi?" which
came in Rani (not in Kalkandu) was realy great. He mostly wrote detective
novels with "Sankarlal" and "Thamizhvaanan". In Sankralal novel the main
charecters are AC Hammeedh, Kathirikai, Velappan and Sankarlal's wife and
their servent maid. The another character in "Sankarlal" stories is "Tea".
Sankarlal only drink "Theneer" (tea). Arputhamana novelgal. Most of them
are based on English Novels. He wrote many Books like "100 Vayadhu Varai
Vazhvathepadi?", "Neengalum Thatezhuthu Payilalam","Mechanic Avadhu
Epadi?". Who wrote "100 Vayuadhu vari vazhvathepadi?" died in a Deepavali
day(I think that is 1977) at the age of 50 because of over strain. Mostly
his charecter names are like "Kani Mozhi", "Mani Muzhi", "Thamizhch
Selvan", "Amudha", "Vetri velan" and many Thamizh Names. If any one wants
special Tamizh Names then you can get it from Tamizhvaanan novels.
He wrote novels and short stories to small children also. His charecter
"Sankarlal" is equivelent to Ian Flaming's James Bond. Sankarlal always
escaped from great danger.The sires like "Sankarlal Thuparigiral", "Tokyo
vil Sankarlal", "Paris il Sankarlal", "Sankarlal", "Berlin il Sankarlal"
are very good novels.
He always end the episode with expectation like "Sankarlal Theneer
Kopaiyai Kaiyel Eduthar, Appozhudhu Velan Vail Kadhavai Thirandhu
Kondirundhan, Ulle oru karuppu nira Jeep vandhadu. Adhil...". Next episode
only he will continue the matter with "Assistant Commisionr Hammeed Ulle
Vandhar", some time it may not be the continuation of the pervious
episode.
Thamizhvaanan's novel are sweat like "Kalkandu". The two magazines
"Kumudham" & "Kalkandu" both come from same publications. Kalkandhu is
very informative.
Thamizhvaanan Bhadhilgal also very good. He critised MGR as "Attai Kathi
Virar" and he didn't accepted the title given to MGR as "Puratchi
Nadigar". Because of MGR's charishma he called him "Makkal Thilagam". He
also critsised Kannadhasan as "Kinnavasan".
I didn't hear his voice. I saw his pictures in Kumudham and Kalkundu and
in Documentries. But whenever some one talked about Thamizhvaanan then
Those Blak Cooling glasses, big Hat, White shirt, pant and Tie were come
to my mind.
He mostly used Tamizh Words in his novel like "Kulir Kannadi" for "Cooling
Glass", "Theneer" for "Tea", "Perundhu" for 'Bus", "Pugai Vandi" or "Min
Vandi" for "Trains".
Any one knows about him very well please participate in this discussion.

There is a wide chasm between the creative and literary writers
(who are, but only a handful) in thamizh and the crassly vulgar,
commercial (nothing wrong with that imo), repetitive, sentimental
authors and downright plagiarists who go by the name of thamizh
novelists.
With the advent of the glossy covered (mostly with a sketch of a
scantily clad young women and a few droplets of blood - a highly
freudian symbolism?) magazines, came a crop of writing machines:
namely Rajesh Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Pattukkottai Prabhakar, Subha
(two people actually, Suresh & Bala I think), Devibala (not a
woman) and a lot more, spinning 100-120 pages of non-stop junk day
after day, week after week, month after month ...
thamizhvaaNan was their precursor. Devoid of any creativity, he
produced monumental junks. Sankarlal here and Sankarlal there. Why
pretend? He even had himself as the detective hero of some of his
novels. Most of his stories were completely plagiarised.
I know, I know... "to each his own" and all that! But yet, to
mention writers like pudhumaippiththan in the same article as
thamizhvaaNan is .... sacrilegeous !
This dishing out of cheap 'masala' is however lapped up eagerly by
a responsive audience whose only other exhilerating cultural
fulfillment is in the cinema theatre watching Ramarajan in bright
yellow and pink shirt fondling any of the assorted heroines or
milking the cows.
It was no wonder mowni's short stories were rejected by aanandha
vikatan and kumudham!

You missed out one very illustrous name from the list -- Pushpa
Thangaurai! Anitha Aindhavadu, Aruna Aaravadhu, etc. were some
of his masterpiecies. My dad stopped Rani Muthu after that
gentleman's articles started arriving with great regularity
in that magazine.

PS: I never found Thamizhvaann bad when when I was in high school.
In fact I thought of eating glocose tablets and driking annasi pazha charu
as quite neat! However, when I re-read some of his works a couple of years
ago, I was chagrined at my 'junk' taste when I was young :)-
I used to enjoy Muthu comics too when was in school. I have fond
memories of Irumbukai Mayavi, Lawrence & David, etc. I would
gladly pay a premium to get hold of those 'ancient classics' --
does anybody have them?

About Achamillai, Achamillai as you mentioned Sarita had a dinner in that
film.
Some remarkable scenes in that film.
1. Flash back is shown as the fall going back.
2. A charcter is called Sudhandiram, who born in the year of 1947 is a
dwarf.When that charecter was weaping under the Gandhi Statue, there is a
caption "Sudhandiram Gandhi Silaiyen Kizhe Azhudhu Kondirukiradhu".
3. The towel colour changing when talked about politics by Nayakkar.
(After that that person called Thundu Nayakar)
4. The caption about Nayakar's speech ("Nayakarin Karuthukal Nam
Karuthukal Alla")
5. Nayakar locked his mouth with a big lock
6. Delhi Ganesh burnt the party flag at Rajesh House. In that scene the
camera shows Delhi Ganesh face with bright light and slowly shows the
flag.
7. Riddle between Gopi and a girl. The riddle from that girl when Gopi
asked her to come to temple is " Varadhirundhal Vandhirupen, Vandhadhinal
Varavillai" which has so many meanings for this riddle.
8. In a the factory there will be a lot of noice in the factory, that time
Sarita tells somthing to Rajesh.Rajesh asks her "Ennama factoryla enna
sona sathathila kadhe keka" and Saritha replied "Kadhula vizhakudhauthen".
And in the next day Rajesh stoped the machines and the words from Sarita
"Mukka Paru Mukka, Mudhiri Pazha Mukkatam, Kadichu Thinalam Pola", then
every one laughed at her and she "Asadu Vazhinjufys" and go back into the
room and started crying.
9. Wonderful Camera handled by Ragunadha Reddy (if I am correct other wise
the camaraman should be B.Loknatha and Ragunadha Reddy assisted
him).N.R.Kittu handled the editing with his assistance of Ganesh-Kumar.
The riddle song was written by the News reader Thamizhanban.
V.S.Narashimhan's debut film as a music director.
"Avaram Poovu,Arezhu Nala..." by SPB, P.Suseela is very good. Special
mention to KB for his Thirunelveli Accent dialogues.

I doubt it. It was rumoured that he employed a lot of ghost writers -
I believe this readily - the styles in some of his works were so varied that
one has the impression they were NOT written by one single person. Hmmmm...

I was around eleven or twelve when I became a member of, and started
borrowing books from the District central library in Madras. I was scolded at
home whenever I brought home Pushpa Thangadurai (though my sister took them
and read them) or sujatha, as they were supposed to contain passages
unsuitable for me. So I switched over to Thamizhvaanan - to me, as long
as it was a thriller, everything was OK. But again I was reprimanded for
reading 'Trash'. ('teased' might be a better description of the response
from the elders in the family.) Looking back now, I think they were
right. Those books (of Thamizhvaanan, and also Pushpa Thangadurai, to a
large extent) have left in me the deep impression that those writers were
just trying to fool the readers - there was absolutely no informtion
content. Most of the Sankarlal stories, I am convinced, were plain
bluffs, not to mention the 'thamizhvaanan thuppaRigirAr' series, all these
_bull shit_ (excuse me for using this expression, but I could not think of
a better term that describes those books) about their adventures in
foreign countries, or the influence they wielded, the knowledge they possessed
the unbelievable twists in the narration, and all that rot (there ! another
wonderful expression) would certainly make me sick.
That I am so overwhelmed by Sujatha, is perhaps the reason why
I view thamizhvaanan with such scepticism. Let me just go through your
next posting and if I have any remarks, I will respond again.

I recall 'veN suruttu' for cigarettes. This fanatic use of 'thooya thamizh'
got on my nerves, and was one reason why I gave up reading thamizh vaanan.

This "sudhandhiram" character has been used in the best way possible in this
movie... sudhandhiratha paisAvukkAga eppadi ellAm use paNirukkAnga
pAtheengaLA... ;) ;)

TamilVanan's early novels were really good. One such novel that comes
to my mind is 'karunAgam'. There is also another novel by him where
the story line based on the disapperance on Subash Chandra Bose. A
treasure hunt group looking for the plane crash and end up in a string
of islands finally manage to retrieve it. I don't recall the story
fully but it was one of his early novels..
IMO after Sankarlal's debut he became a 'churner' than being really
creative. Till today one doesn't know how Sankarlal can determine so
much information about a character, so accurately, from a lipstick
message scribbled on a glass pane (??????-l Sankarlal)
Ofcourse with people like Sujatha (Rangarajan) taking over he was
obviously left behind , I believe.
In this context there was another mystery writer - WR Swarnalatha
His/Her work in the '50s were really good. One I remember reading
(thanks to thodarkathai binding culture that runs in my family) va\ery
vaguely, with cops dressed in shorts (or whatever you call them). The
best part was the entire page used to be black and the lettering was
unique (in white)...
