...at least i think they were the 70's. it's been many years since i
really listened to tamil film songs--i loathe arr, all the songs in roja
sounds like he paid the singers enough to show up but not enough to
actually sing--but i still find myself singing songs i haven't actually
heard in at least a decade. and i generally remember the tackier, more
idiotic songs. when i was in mattunga recently (hark to my warning about
the udipi restaurant), i found a few songs i remembered, but i wonder if
anyone remembers the films for the rest of these songs...or at least more
of the lyrics so i can stop singing just these snippets...
1) machan-a pathengala, mazhaivazhai thokku kullai
this movie was shown almost every day on singaporean t.v.. it's some love
triangle nonsense, where she who is fated to die at the end sings
this as she romps through the forest looking for he who will stay with his
wife.
2) kaathalikku nairam illai/(something something) kaalam illai.
3) yenna-di rakamma....di. a classic of the dabanguthu variety.
4) kolai, kolai-ya mundirika, suthi, suthi, suthi va, chellai edutha
sindirika (?), kootathillai irupathu kandu pidi.
a girl sings this with some kids in the other movie shown every day on
singaporean t.v., a saga about origins and adoptions which i think had
thenga srinivasan.
5) the rukmini, vandi varuthu song. destined to be a camp classic, i
predict, and that old lady with the long ear-lobes will one day be shown
on monitors all over the indian version of champs.
6) dinum, dinum, poomalai vangi vanthen, pookal illaya. i think this is
for jagadish--i think it's a kamal hasan song.
and then there's that nagesh falling asleep and going to indraloka to
plead his case movie, with immortal
7) eg, eg, egmore
song that no one in the world seems to remember but me.
mina
ps. anand kannan, i'm counting on you.
Absy fantastic song indeed, Raja's debut ... and what a debut !!

"machan-a pathengala, malaivazhai thOppukkuLLE" is from annakkiLi.
"malaivAzhai thOppu" is banana plantation/farm/whatever. "malaivAzhai"
is a variety of banana which grows in the mountains. "thOppukkuLLE"
is "thOppukku uLLE" or "inside the thOppu".
No, its not a love triangle. The woman who's destined to die (as you put it)
had an affair with this guy who later married another woman for dowry (to pay
his sister's wedding expenses as the story goes). Nonsense story indeed,
when one thinks about it - the absurdities people went through just to
follow this dowry tradition !
> 2) kaathalikku nairam illai/(something something) kaalam illai.
It's not a seventies movie. Judging from the fact that it was probably
a movie from my dad's college years, I would place it in the late fifties
or early sixties. It goes
"kAthalikka nEram illai, kAthalippAr yArumillai
vAlibaththil kAthalikka jAdhagathil vazhiyumillai"
The scene has one of the heroes posing as an old man and the lines
translate to "I don't have time for love, nor a person who loves me;
as per my horoscope/fate I didn't have a chance to love someone in
my youth"
> 3) yenna-di rakamma....di. a classic of the dabanguthu variety.
"yennadi rAkkamma pallAkku neLippu en nenju kulungudhadi
siru kaNNAdi mookkuthi mANikka chevappu machchAna izhukkudhadi"
is from some Sivaji Ganesan starrer. I'll leave it for other nettors
to decode this. Something about the impact of the looks of the heroine
on the hero - her glass nose-ring, fair complexion etc. I'm not sure
what "pallAkku neLippu" means.
> 4) kolai, kolai-ya mundirika, suthi, suthi, suthi va, chellai edutha
> sindirika (?), kootathillai irupathu kandu pidi.
Haha ! That's a hilarious version. It's
"kolai kolaiyA mundhirikkA
nariyE nariyE suththi vA
koLLai adichavan engirukkAn
koottaththilirukkAn kandupidi"
I think this is a song people sing while playing some group game in TN.
Translates to "bunches and bunches of grapes...oh, fox ! Run around and
find the guy who stole them - he must be in this group". Not much of a
meaning.

This was banned in AIR for some reason. Goes "OrampO, OrampO,
RukmaNu vaNdi varuthu". I think this is an early eighties song.

Never heard this one.
Cheers,
Gayathri.
I was a bit disappointed on reading this as I love Roja songs.
I know he repeats a lot of his stuff but I find myself buying each and
every album that he does. Maybe its got something to do with his digital
recording :)

kaathalikka neram illa had a lot of good songs but obviously
you must be thinking of ' kaathalikka neram illa, kathalippaar
yaarum illai'. My favorite in this film is 'anupavam puthumai'
I also remember someone saying to me that Jesudas started singing for
films with this one.

I don't know which film has this song , but this song always kindles
the memory of my going to school by rikshaw in Madras. We used to sing
this song 'ormapo orampo rukumani vandi varuthu '. ( The rikshaw
didbn't have a good bell !)

This was a song which kids used to sing while playing a game. I forget
the objective of the game but I used be a keen in being a creator of
chaos/confusion.

Isn't this from 'mazhalai pattalam'
Ever since this 'pettai rap' (and maybe even before that ....) song came
the quality of tamil songs seem to have gone all downhill. Even the
words seem to be meaningless or mundane. What the heck is that 'take it
easy policy...song. The current msuic directors probably have done more
to damage tamil songs.
I for one miss the voice of AM Raja, ... the era of golden voices and
golden words. I even like c.s jayaraman, and the really really ancient
singers.
songs like
'viLodum mugilodum viLayadum veNnilave...' (cs? bhag?)
'ho ho enthan baby' actually most AM raja songs.
On my recent visit I had about 8 cassettes recorded with all old songs. I
wish there were more old songs (AM rajah) on CDs.
Anyway, similarly as the songs go the movies have also gone down. Only
about 1-2 movies seem to be watchable. Indian movies are supposed to be
fantasies. All the movies today only point to the fact that they cannot
even fantasize. The only improvement has been technological. Even the
heroines are terrible (atleast better than JJ). The last good tamil
movies I saw was ... I can't remember (no! that's not the name). Movies
like kadalan, muthu, aasai, valli, badshah..... (I haven't seen indhiyan)
.... all are bullshit (and they wonder why they are flops). Malayalam
movies are a hundred times better.
The last movie I enjoyed (only parts of ..which I watch very often ) was
'michael madana kamarajan'. The role of kamal as the palghat iyer and his
scenes with his father and urvashi ... were hilarious. The rest of the
movie was a bust.

song-a ketu paththu varsham ayirku. i think i deserve some clemency.
anyway, i must point out that, pace kesav, this is *NOT* the same movie as
the machan song. i remember the stories of the movies, and they are
completely different.
i see you have (as have the other respondents) totally ignored the all
important eg eg egmore song! !!! i am totally disappointed in y'all. oh,
make fun of song-killing, but have you come up with the crucial nagesh
movie? i think not.

Isn't it "pattikAdA pattanamA"?
Another song from those times that I remember very vividly is
"malligai en mannan mayangum" sung by vAni jayarAm. I used to get goose bumps
listening to that song - back in my place it was a pouplar song among girls
to sing during "nalangu" in marriages.

Thoppu is orchard/plantation

You're probably referring to Madras nalla madras... which has a stanza
about egmore (TMS, Madras to Pondicherry with Nagesh, Manorama,
Thengai, Suruli, vennira aaadai Moorthy, Bakkoda Kather et al, late60s/early
70s).

It was from the film 'Pattikaadaa Pattanamaa' by Sivaji and Jeyalalitha.
It was one of the (surprise) super hit songs of the year(72/73?), may the
decade. The music director MSV didnt think it wd make it to the top. The
expectations from him was so high then. He cdnt put a foot wrong. He
unwillingly used the song for the film but turned out to be a big hit.
The film story is about a city girl (JJ, who else) coming to terms living
in a village with her murai-maaman (Sivaji).

: This was banned in AIR for some reason. Goes "OrampO, OrampO,

I think the name of the film is 'pozhuthu vidinjachu' or 'Kozhi koovum Neram'.
by Suthakar and Saritha. In this film SPShailaja (SPB's little sister) did
her debut song 'Solaik kuyile... Kaalai paniyE...'
AIR has this habit of popularising some most absurd songs by banning them.
The film was released in 81/82.
