The first ever thEvarm I knew was "pidiyathan uruvumai......" At
that time I never bothered about the meaning of it. Neither did many of
my friends. When I thought about the meaing for the first time, I was sure
that many would not answer the simple question: "On which (form of?) God
that the thEvaram was sung?" Did you ever try it? If you get the meaning
right, you may share it with co-netters...

pidiyathan uruvumai koLamiku kariyathu
vadikodu thanathadi vazhipadu mavaridar
kadikanapathi vara aruLinan mikukodai
vadivinar payilvali valamurai iraiyE.

Another thing I observed was there were no 'nedil' (A, ee, E, oo, O)
in this thEvAram, except in the last 'seer'.

I think the poem is on Shiva. just join the fist two and the last
two words.
' pidiyathan uruvumai valamurai iraiyE'

i.e pidi+athan uru + umai valam + urai iraiyE

pidi - female elephant, umai - uma or pArvathi

Hence the meaning here is

'peN yAnai pOl uruvam koNda umadhEviyin valathu pakkam
vEttirukkum sivaperumAnE'


Now when I read the poem again, the fact that I did Tamil only
upto S.S.L.C is becoming apparent. Still, i can not figure out
the last two lines. But the first two lines + part of the third
line should go as follows,

pidi athan uru umai koLa miku kari athu vadi kodu thanathu adi
vazhipadum avar idar (kaLaya?) kadi kanapathi vara arulinan

Now arranging the words,

thanathu adi vazhipadum avar idar kaLaya, pidi ...... kodu,
kadi kanapathi vara arulinan,

Meaning:

As sakthi assumed the form of a female elephant, the one who
took the form of a big male elephant, so that Vigneswara ( Vicky :-) )
may be born, to rid his devotees of theior distress,
(Obviously, this is Siva)

The Thiru Nyaanasambandha Naayanaar verse from Saiva Thirumurrai 2 tells of the Tamil account of the Manifestation of Pillaiyaar from the Divine Grace (Sathi) of Sivaperumaan,in contrast to distorted myths found in Aryan-Sanskrit texts which ascribe human qualities to God. For the benefit of the Devotees, the celestials and earthlings, Siva assumed the Form of a male elephant and Umai of a female Elephant and merged as the Form of Pillaiyaar representing Wisdom and Power, to put a stop to Yaanaimuga Asooran. The Form of Pillaiyaar has the head of an animal, body of a celestial and legs of a Boodha Kannam as Yaanaimuga Asooran's boon included not to be destroyed by either an animal, celestial, Boodha Kannam r any weapon but he did not mention a combination of all three therefore Sivaperumaan assumed the Form of Kadi Gannabadhi and defeated him using a tusk. Yaanaimuga Asooran then became a bandicoot, the Vaagannam of Gannabadhi.
