Talking about the "first" color movie ...

I remember my parents telling me, that the first color stuff
used to be song sequences from big budget movies in the sixties.

As for the first full length color movie, I'm curious too

As far as I know, one MGR movie was partly made in color first. It
was some story like Sinbad. The second half of the movie came in
Gava color. MGR starts moving towards the castle in the rivers/seas.
Then came full color movies. As far as cinemascope movies are
concerned, I'm sure it was Raja Raja Cholan.

Hi:

Ali Baba vum Narpadu Tirudargalum was the first Tamil movie in
_SEPIA TONE_ and thus had the distinction of being the first Tamil
movie in color (of any kind, not incl. B/W which are also colors :-)

The first Tamil cinema in _EASTMAN COLOR_ was VeeraPandiya Kattbomman.

Hope this helps.

Balaji.

I think it is Veera Pandiya Kattabomman starring Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji
and it was released in 1959.

I believe that you are correct. VPK was indeed the first
FULL LENGTH colour film in thamizh. It was originally made
in "gaeva" colour in India. The producer B.R. Panthulu then took
the print to a London, U.K., lab and had it converted to
TechniColor (how, I don't know!) and it was released in 1959.
However, the MGR movie \bt n^AdOdi ma_n_nan \et which was released
a few months earlier in 1958 was PARTLY in colour.
