I believe, you are referring to 'Mara valli kizhangu'.
If I am right, then it is tapiaco or cassava.
If I am wrong, describe how does it look like and in what kind of
oorukai, it is used?

Narathai has a much more thicker skin than what is commonly
referred to as lime in US. I have not seen anything like
Narathai in US.

This is a big problem when handling common names, whether Tamil or English,
where one name is use for many plants or one plant has many names.
The original post was about the Naarathai used in pickles.
There are many types of Naarathai.
The naarathai that is used in pickles is Citrus aurantifolia, commonly called
lime in english (description above). Other Tamil names for this species are
kozhinchi pazham, kichili pazham.
Another thick rinded citrus used in pickles is the elumichai (bot. Citrus limon)
called lemon in english.
The thick rinded naarathai that is called bitter lemon in english is known as
kadaarangai or kadaara naarathai in Tamil, (bot. Citrus medica). A variety of
this Citrus medica is called thurunchi naarathai in Tamil.
Enough of bitter & sour stuff here. Lets get to the sweet.
