I can think of two reasons why most of the brahmins are fair. (1)
Aryan origin and (2) (Artificial) Selection. That is, fair skinned
brahmins are preferred within the community and they leave more
offspring.

This phenomenon is is not limited to Brahmins alone, all high caste males in
urban settings prefer to mate with fairer women thus not only are Brahmins
fairer than the general population but also the rich and the higher castes
do have a higher proportion of fair people with or without Aryan origin.
To be frank I know many brahmins who are very very dark in the south.
Very true. I have seen old photographs of Indians in South Africa.
The current generation seems to much fairer than the first generation.
(May also be problems with the lighting of early photography.)
The Theory of Evolution and Natural/Artifical Selection many of the
observed features/behaviours very beautifully. For a readable account,
check out the book "How the Mind Works" by Steven Pinker.

The darker brahmins usually end up as poor cooks and do not leave many
successful offsprings. The societal artificial selection works against
them.

:-)
You mean parents sit around and say "Rama, you are
great in math, you could be a great scientist, but because you are
dark, we will make you a cook. And Ravi, you can't study to
save your life, but we will make you rich somehow because you
are so fair" ?
You really harbor an absurd and nutty picture of
life, don't you ?

The colour complexes among brahmins is no worse or no better than the rest of the
population. The above statement has absolutely no empirical basis, just a hit and
run remark. There is absolutely no correlation between brahmin cooks and skin tone
distribution between them- unless one means the brahmins cooks are covered in soot
and smoke in the absolutely primitive conditions of traditional kitchens which
burnt lots of smoke producing wood and with very little ventilation. To the best of
my knowledge no studies have been conducted on the success of brahmin cooks'
offspring-
Societal artificial selection works against them.??? Is this an admission of the
poster's own prejudices? of his prejudice against darker people?

This story was told by Biruhu Munivar to his disciples in his daily
discourse.
Long long ago , there was a time, when the vedic dharma was at its pinnacle,
“people were where they were supposed to be”. The dark and invisible ( That’s
why “un”touchable ?) one’s taking the “blue” collar jobs, the fair one’s
taking the “green” collar jobs, the fairer one’s taking the “red” collar jobs
leaving the “Bright” collar jobs to the exclusive, pure fairest one’s
according to the holy books as well as the *fate* written on their forehead.
They also had very separate “neighborhoods” each one, inaccessible to the
people from lower echelons. They all even liked this status even if the
occupational hazard makes them to eat amid “human” excretions in case of blue
collar ones or animal “excretions” in case of “bright” collar ones. “Anda
sasaram” ( the whole universe)is cooled down with the “heat” of this
discipline. Then suddenly this happened. There in one remote corner one
belonging to the fairest group begets a darker child much to the
astonishment of not only the parents but also of the neighbors. The angry
neighbors forced the couple to abandon the child ( may be in the “blue”
neighbor hood) fearing the god’s anger. They even carried out their jobs
more rigorously leaving no letups afraid of the recurrence of the similar
events forced by the angry god. They even ensured not even a dark monkey
present near their neighborhood. Alas! That happened again. Another begets
ever darker child. It happened again. Here, there, everywhere. Abandoning the
child became impossible. The elders were *now* worried. They feared the
whole universe is coming down. Some one predicted total chaos. They rechecked
the security features and ensured that no one from blue neighbor hood or even
red neighborhood entered theirs to cause this pollution. More tighter laws
were written to ensure this. They all decided to do a year long “suth Janya
Yaga” to pray to the parapbrimham for rectifying this anomaly quickly.
They closely monitored whoever got pregnant that year . Gods grace! from
that next year all the child’s in the “bright” neighborhood were born as
pure as the Sun light again. Whoever born darker from the less blessed "dark
brighter" one's hereafter were given a slightly altered job description.
Some of them diverted to “Pandaram Band” to cook the food for the god and
some to perform the rites for the dead.
Biruhu stopped his story here and asked his students.
Now can anyone tell why was this happened ? How did it get rectified?.
Nobody could answer. And he keeps asking that question still even now to
his disciples, as the time is eternal in the vedic land, hoping that he will
get a convincing answer to himself and at the same time praying for his
abandoned first child.

News Report -- Year 2100AD .
A TTFedEX (time travel Federal express) delivery man was suspended and put
under investigation after he placed a huge “Viagra” shipment in the “Blue”
neighborhood, Vedapuri and dropped the receipt near a Tulasi Madam in a
house in the “Bright” neighborhood, on the way back, in the year 2100BC.
Social scientists are ordered to investigate the possible anarchy, this might
have caused back in 2100BC.
The *Alien* hand is suspected in this incident.

surely you do not mean that there are no matrimonials from other castes,
rich or poor, specifying caste preference?
my family liberally sprinkled with individuals ranging from the very
dark to very fair. However, I do not remember discussion or denigration
of anyone (childhood memories based on their color!). In fact, I find
it strange that both Rama and Krishna are supposed to be very dark and
all temple silaigaL are made of black rock, yet black has acquired this
negative connotation. I believe that this prejudice is of much recent
origin, say within the past 400 years, if you know what I mean?
maybe it is not caste but HIERARCHY of castes, that is the problem!
Even assuming that the one much hated group is simply made to vanish,
the other groups will remain, at least in rural India, for a very long
time. The groups mean a lot in term of food, society, customs, rituals,
events, birth, death etc etc too numerous to list! I certainly would
not want to see the very colorful and different marriage customs of so
many different groups in India to simply disappear. The idea that there
is no hierarchy and that all are equal is a very positive, powerful one
and can be driven in through sustained education and mass promotion. I
feel it is achievable. I will be the first one to admit the gross
injustices so unfairly inflicted on an enormous population. If there is
any way to punish the perpetrators, let it be implemented. Otherwise,
we are more likely to succeed if we direct our efforts at building a new
world! puthiyathOr ulagam seivOm!
of course, I respect your right to your views!

I have seen matrimonial ads from people of all castes about
"fair-complexion" or "whaeatish-complexion", but "arya color brahmin"!!-
no one has heard of such a thing. Can you reproduce matrimonial ads
which specify "arya color brides or groom"? We would be quite
interested to see that wording, as that term is completely unknown.
Raghu
The color of men is imaterial in many castes
But women it is a major problem w.r.t marriage. Specially among Brahmins
because there are more fair maidens available for choice. I know personally
a Brahmin lady who is over 50 years now, who couldnt get married at the
right time beacuse of her dark complexion. I am pretty sure with education
this problem si going away. The following article called Apartheid in South
Asia is interesting to read.
