Jaya backs Chandralekha for Madras
mayor`s post

In a surprise development, All India Anna DMK general secretary and former
Chief Minister J Jayalalitha today withdrew her party`s candidate for the
post of Mayor of Madras in favour of Janata Party State unit president V S
Chandralekha who is pitted against Chief Minister M Karunanidhi`s son and
sitting MLA, Mr V K Stalin.

Hours before the expiry of the deadline for the withdrawal today, the AIADMK
candidate and former Minister D Jayakumar pulled out of the race in favour
of Ms Chandralekha.

In a statement, Ms Jayalalitha said she had taken the decision to support Ms
Chandralekha in response to Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy`s
appeal to all parties to extend support against Mr Karunanidhi`s attempt to
perpetuate family rule.

She said no party interested in democratic traditions could ignore the
appeal, especially as Mr Karunanidhi had already made his nephew Murasoli
Maran a minister in the Union Cabinet and was now trying to make his son the
mayor of Madras, forgetting his oft-repeated commitment to decentralisation
of power. She said concentration of power in the hands of one family would
encourage attempts to crush opposition.

Ms Chandralekha is the candidate of the Janata Party-Congress alliance and
is backed by the United Communist Party.

Ms Jayalalitha`s decision to support Ms Chandralekha comes close on the
heels of the Supreme Court order last Monday directing the CBI to take over
the investigation into the acid attack on her in May 1992. Ms Chandralekha
quit the IAS soon after the acid attack which she linked to her stout
opposition to state-owned Tidco`s disinvestment in Spic. One of the 11
accused in the case, Surla alias Sudalaimuthu, a hireling from Bombay, has
in a confessional statement implicated Ms Jayalalitha and former Minister V
Madhusudhanan.

With Mr Jayakumar pulling out of the race, eight candidates are in the
field. Prominent among the other candidates are actor S.S. Chandran of the
Marumalarchi DMK, Mr A K Murthi of the PMK and Mr Viswanathan Kakkan, son of
former Congress Minister Kakkan.

The elections, scheduled for October 12, are being held after a gap of 28
years.

One of the reasons why VaiKo left DMK because he found that he had no
future in that party because of family dynasty.

Chandralekha is a good Administrator. Stalin has the support of the youths
and the image that he is the son of MUKA. People has to decide who is the
best person to be the mayor .

If DMK would have appointed any other person with credibility other than
Stalin, the party would have erased the felling of family dynasty from the
opponents.But does that mean Stalin should not be given any responsible
post in the Tamil Nadu government?. That is not fair. Youths should be
encouraged to take up responsible positions.

Swamy is a brilliant fellow (or atleast that's waht his credentials
say). But, his background seems to give him the fanaticism needed to
carry on with brokering.

You forgot the MGR - JANAKI - JEYA triangle. That is "family" too( one
that stinks).

Karunanidhi should be respected for what he ahs done for the state. Even
great
men make mistakes and I feel that this particular mistake is for the
good
for the future of TN. A bad term for Stalin as Mayor is sure to help the
right
person at the right time.

Right now they should just see to it that JJ is kicked out of TN for
good (Iam
sure they will)
