Hello friends,
I just thought it would be fun to challange you to
a round of Syrian TV trivia about old series, characters,
and commercials. The theme is going to be mostly
from the 60s and 70s.. for now. If you don't know the
answer it could mean one of two things: 1- you are
not worthy of Syrian programs :) 2- or simply you are
not as old as I am. :) Good luck! You will need it :)
1- What was the name of the personality played by Durayed
La77am PRIOR to the invention of the Ghawwar personality?
If you know the first name, then I am impressed. But if
you know both the first and the last name, then I am humbled.
2- Who was the little girl who appeared in this infamous
commercial that we still quote until this very day! maybe :)
- 7ilweh mrayetkoun...
- lak hai mo mrayeh.. [the littel girl]
- lakan sho?..
- hai jaT lal akel [the littel girl]
3- What was the name of the hostess of the Children program
which used to air on Thursday nights (60s and 70s)?
4- What was the name of the person who piloted Grandizer (or
actually who was Grandizer?) Carton Series (79 - 82)
Thabet
How about 'em Braves? :-)
For the fourth one, it was Duke Fleed (Daiskee!), as for the rest, I'm
too young (or you're too old?? ;)

That's getting REALLY old !!
We didn't have a TV at home before 78, and by that time it was Mouna Kurdy.
:

E7em, you mean you kept watching kids programs from 60s to 82 ? That's
a looooooooooooooooooong childhood :).
Anyway, that was Duke Fleet.

Let me see, for the first question i swear i knew it before but can't

the syrian hostess is Fadwa RiHawi and the name of the pilote is
Dayski ;-) i also remember Kuji, Hikaro and Dr. Amon. I still rememebr the
song which we use to hear at the beginning of the Cartoons ;-) it says:
3alli 3alli batal fleed haya Terr ya Grendizer
bi3azmen 3alli 7imaman arsel iftek bil-a3da'a
Kafe7 sharran w'adrob makran bi 3azmen wa iba'a
min ajli salamen fawqa al-ardi fi koll'il ajwa'a
BTW if the answer to the 2nd question is saba7 Gazaeri i won't be
astonished

1- The other personality of Durayed was indeed Carlos...
Carlos Meranda to be exact. Ibaa nailed this one.
2- The girl who was featured in the commercial may very
well be reading this post. She is Lina La77am the younger
daughter of Durayed who happened to be in L.A. California
last I heard.
3- The hostess was indeed Fadwa Ri7awi (aka Mama Fadwa). Right
on, Ali.
4- Grandizer was indeed Daiski (Duke Fleed). Most got that one,
except Azim :) But that's understandable as he only watched his
favorite show, Ardouna al-khadra'a with the unmistakeable theme
song by wadi3 al-safi (khadra ya bladi khadra... :) and the ever
refreshing opening of the show: Akhi al-falla7... :)
Well, as for the rumors that I watched cartoons well into my
20s, it is simply not true... I have never watched Remy, Treasue Island,
Pepero, 3adnan wa Lina, Sasouki, Abtal al mala3eb (Hamido),
Sinan, or Captain Majed. ;-D
What can I say? I am cursed with 10 Terabytes of cache memory
in my head and I cannot forget anything even if I wanted to :)
So, any other challangers out there? Perhaps someone would
like to challange us with a question or two about Syrian TV.
Thabet
A quote from my favorite commercial:
haza el-miq3ado el-mota7arriko wasala bayna jabalayn
wa colonia spray caress wasalat bayna qalbayn :)
[ ..snip ..]
Thanks for that contribution Thabet .. I feel left out ..
BTW, we never received the Syrian TV up in Latakia until they
install that repeater antenna in Solounfeh .. I used to watch the
Lebanese channel 5&11 (which I was told never reached Damascus
anyhow) ..
I asked Hind about Duraid's first character, and guessed correct.

Most anchorwomen were ok, but the most obnoxious anchorperson
has got to be Mahran Yousef. The word sa'eel doesn't even
come close to describe him. Lak la sout wala soura.
Don't insult me ya Azim with these easy questions. Lak I told
you I have 10 terabytes to spare :) Do you have anything else? :)
Anyone?
Here goes my questions:
1- There was a show in '78 -'79 called: Awraq al thoulatha'a (Tuesday
Leaves). Who hosted it? What was it? And what happened to it?
2- Badri Abu Kalabsha did not start in Sa7 el-Noum until the 3rd
episode. Who played the prison warden prior to him (i.e. in the
first two episodes)?
3- What names did surface during all of Ghawwar's work identifying
family members of al-tousheh family (fake or not). This includes
all of his shows. Name at least 3. (hint: 2 alleged brothers,
one faked by him and the other never shown, and a father).
4- Ghawwar had a "girlfirend" in 7ammam el hana, and another one
in Ma'alib Ghawwar. What were their names?
5- Name 5 weapon systems that were available to Grandizer, and
name one monster that he fought.
I can go on, but I won't :) I feel like I am handing out the
surprise quiz. :)

Ok, this actually can have many answers. One of them is

Maha el-Jabri.
Ok, here is a quick question for you:
Where did the famous sarcastic one-liner "ou3a el-zait" come from?
(hint: it came from a play). What play was it? Name some of the
people in it? And who actually said the above line? BTW, Ghawwar
was in it, but it was not him who said the line.

Actually it was hosted by Marwan Sawwaf. It later transformed
to become Majlet al Talfizion, a show that 3anza later hosted
(and ruined). The original show had 3 different topics each
episodes dealing mostly with literature and art and latest news
and analysis from that arena. It was outstanding.

His father was Mash3al el-tousheh. Fawwar is right tho :)
This name came up for the first time when Abu Fehmi (in sa7 el noum)
simply asked ghawwar what his name was... Ghawwar went on and on
that he might have been mixed up at birth with a brother of his
named Fawwar, thus Ghawwar was not sure whether his name was Ghawwar
or Fawwar :) Another brother was Jinad baik el tousheh who was
faked in Ma'alib Ghawwar by Ghawwar to scam money off of Hisni
and abu sayya7.

OK, here goes. Here's my attempt at answering Thabet's trivia questions:
1> Again, not a clue
2> It was the actor that played the character of Abu-Fihmi in 7ammam
El-hana, with the famous :In lam takon zi'ban, akalatka elzi'aabu baabaa"
3> There was Fawwar El-Tosheh in Sa7 Elnome, Carlos in 'Ahwet

4> His girlfriend in 7ammaam Elhana was IStihaaj. The one in maalib

5> Al-sa7n el dawwaar, Al-QurS El-lawlabi, Al-lahab elqaatel, ...
Also, Majd Shebl (was m=nice looking guy)

me for doing that.

i, it was right above masjed alraudah.
fatta7tilli jrouhati bikalamak ya3ion.
Golani
I believe it used to be in al-Fardous area.
>2- Where was sinama 3aidah?
This became cinema Aphamia in al-Nasr street next to the Main
Post Office across from al Hijaz Station. This cinema used to
be a favorite hang-out for homos. Last serial killer (in the
late 70s) who abducted young teenagers, was arrested there and
consequently hung in al Marjeh Square.
>3- Where was sinama souria?
About 30 meters north of Souq al Hameedyyeh. This cinema always
featured, "two movies at the same time" :) filman be-an wa7ed.
True story: One time a bunch of us decided to explore this
black hole and entered the cinema (mishan el-zanbara, mo aktar)
In the middle of the movie (al fahed), some cinema employee shouted:
rfa3o rejlakoun ya shabab, bedna nishtouf, no joke :) I had heard
about this before, but I did not think it was true :)
>4- Where is sinama Gazi and who attend it?
It became cinema Diana on share3 Rami between Marjih and share3 al Nasr.
"Ta7it el karasi,....be cinema Ghazi .." :) Knowing that it is
in the Marjih area,.. attendees ranged from your average 3askari mishaweb,
to your average marjih pimp :) Not that I know anything about this.
>5- What was the color of the streetcar (tramwai)that was used as public

Green body with beige tops. There was also another line passing
through Marjih. I also remember the single headlight they had.
The last tramwai was removed in 1969, it operated in Qasa3, Bab Touma.
It was too dangerous, and kids got injured always trying to chase
the it and climb on it.

Lah Lah ya Golani (a lah for each Golani :). Masra7 el shouk is
a name of a play (masra7eyeh) that was played by Ghawwar, Hesni,
Abu Saya7, Yaseen, Nabeel Khizam, etc. So it was not a real
theatre, but a play. It was played in masra7 el Hamra I believe.
In it Ghawwar plays the scene when he and his wife go to a picnic
but end up surronding themsleves with sheets so no one looks at them.
In it also, he said ana mas'oul kahraba.. then the guard answer,
but we had another mas'oul from kahraba enter a minute ago, he
says, the other one was 110v, I am 220v. But their beginnings,
as most of the early artists, was in al masra7 al 3askari.

Incidently, this line was said in Masra7 al shouk play. By Nabeel
Khizam (allah yerhamo). The story goes, he was hired when they first
built the building in which he is the janitor. They hired him to warn
customers of the wet paint then (ou3a el zait). Thirty years later,
according to the play, no one had done anything about him, so he still
warned people about the wet paint. Masra7 el shouk was a varaity play,
shouk was meant to symbolize critisism of the social and other
aspects of our life then (the play was shown in the early 70s).

Salah Aldilli, I do not remember the time.

I agree with 100%, I think I did not articulate my question correctly, I
really meant masra7 alshouk as a moral masrah not a theater as I stated.
your peace of information took me back to white and black TV and a very
funny time. Speaking about ancient, no one can beat you man.
question:
When was the first year the wazaret altarbyah inforced the green uniform
for alfittouah?
Golani
1- TV related questions

local culture & history
1- Who founded the Syrian Military forces (post French mandate)

Damascus stuff:
1- Who is Birro al-3aTTar ? (a question I had to hear all the time
from people wondering if he is related to me or not, eventhough

It was in 1970, Salah Aljadeed was rhe most poerfull man in Syria, the
president was Nour Aldeen Alatasi. Aljadeed was a socialist and had a
great deal of respect to Chinees way of poilitcs. He enforced this
uniform but it was made from much tougher fabric with a style simmiler
to Mao's style.
