Army headquarters said that it was the fourth major LTTE camp to fall
to the 59 Division since the launch of the campaign in the eastern
part of the Vanni region. The LTTE had lost three bases viz Munagam
(May 29), Michael (July 4) and Sugandan (July 27).
The facility seized on Saturday had been called Jeevan base situated
in the Andankulam area. The underground bunker complex consisted of 4
main buildings, Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told
The Island. Fortifications had been constructed with thick concrete to
sustain heavy artillery fire and aerial bombardment. Troops had also
found four cells used to hold prisoners. The Brigadier called them
torture cells.
Welioya front lies along the forward defence line east of the A 9 road
but is mainly active on the eastern borders of the Wanni region. The
LTTE-held Mullaittivu lies 25 km from Kokkuttoduvai, one of the
launching positions of the ongoing offensive.(SF)
