UK 'diverted' Lanka tsunami aid : Chairman of WHO

Minister accuses UK of failing to keep the tsunami pledge.
A senior Sri Lanka minister has accused the Great Britain of failing
to keep its pledge to support the island nation after the devastating
Asian tsunami.
Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva accused Britain of diverting
tsunami aid collected for Sri Lanka to Indonesia and Maldives.
The Leader of the House made the comments after opening a official
residence complex for doctors and nurses in Kantale, Trincomalee
district.
He thanked Japanese Red Cross for providing Rs. 450 million to build
the complex.
Minister Silva, who is also the current chairman of the WHO, said he
'regrets' that UK and some other countries diverted the aid aimed at
tsunami displaced.
Over 35,000 people were estimated killed in Sri Lanka after the Boxing
Day tsunami in 2004.
Tens of thousands more were displaced alongside the eastern and the
southern coastal line.
Western governments joined International aid agencies and individual
donors to help devastated countries including Indonesia and Thailand.
