Buddhists continue to suffer rape in Bangladesh

the Buddhist women in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Women are vulnerable
to molestation, rape and extra-judicial execution by the Bangladesh
army and Muslim setters. Following are some examples of the recent
crimes.
On 30 October 2009, Muslim settlers gang raped a Tripura woman (19) at
Sonaichari of Sitakunda under Chittagong district. The girl went to
Sitakunda to visit her relatives. The miscreants took her to a forest
by force and then gang raped her. The miscreants were identified as
Mohamed Jahur and his 7 associates. Mohamed Jahur is member of the
Union Parishad or local government.
On 18 October 2009 at 11.00, Muslim settlers sexually abuse a primary
school teacher of Sindhu Karbari Para under Panchari upazila (sub-
district). The Muslim settlers attacked her while she was taking bath
near a stream. The Muslim settlers tried to rape her at knife point,
but the woman started shouting and Muslim settlers fled the scene. She
was not able to mention their names but she knew their faces.
On 15 October 2009, a Muslim settler named Mohamed Hossain molested
Jasho Bala Tripura (17) at Guimara union of Matiranga upazila (sub-
district). The settler attacked her while she was going to school. She
is a student of Matiranga Pilot High School.
On 13 September 2009, Mohamed Alamgir (27) attempted to rape a Tripura
girl (18 years) of Manjoy Karbari Para of Sindukchari under
Mahalchari. Around 11.00 am the victim was carrying lunch to her
father at a paddy field. At that time the Muslim settler blocked her
way and tried to grab her. But failing to grab her, the Muslim settler
hit the victim from the back that caused her to drop the lunch box.
The victim tried to run for life, but Mohamed Alamgir caught her from
the back. A scuffle broke out between the settler and the victim. The
settler tried to rape and strangle her. Hearing her scream, the
victim’s father Mr. Matindra Kumar Tripura went to the spot. Sensing
the presence of the victim’s father, Mohamed Alamgir rapidly fled the
scene. Victim sustained several injuries on nose and mouth.
On 4 September 2009 a Mulsim settler named Mohamed Ripan (35) raped an
orphan Marma girl (13 years) of Nakbai Para of Sindukchari area under
Mahalchari. Mohamed Ripan, a construction labourer was brought by Mr.
Babul contractor to work for construction of culvert of Drung stream
at Nakbai village under Sindukchari union. The victim along with her
family lives near the Drung stream. Mohamed Ripan frequently visits
victim’s house on the pretext of drinking water. On 4 September 2009
victim’s mother Ms. Myama Marma went to the Pathachara Buddhist temple
to attend the funeral ceremony of the monk leaving victim alone at the
home. Mohamed Ripan took advantage of this opportunity. He entered the
house of the victim and raped the victim.
