Swami Vivekanand, after his whirlwind tour of the West following his
scintillating success at the Parliament of Religion in Chicago
(1893), returned to India in 1897 via Shri Lanka, then called Ceylon.
This was in response to an invitation from 'the Hindus of Colombo and
Jaffna' (an euphemism for Tamils). It's not difficult to imagine that
the Tamils of Ceylon were highly enthused, like their cousins north
of Palk Strait, by the success of the Hindu monk from Bengal in the
West. The felicitation speech at both places was read out to him in
the name of 'We Hindus of Colombo (or Jaffna)'. Whether any
Sinhalese, who believe their first king, Vijaysinha, had arrived from
Bengal circa 543 BCE, was also present in the gathering is best left
to imagination. A close analysis of the speeches the Swami delivered
at Floral Hall, Colombo, on January 17, 1897, and Jaffna Hindu
College, reveal something curious. Swami Vivekananda, whose
admiration for Buddh was legendary -- he had delivered a speech,
'Buddhism: The fulfilment of Hinduism' in Chicago, -- scrupulously
avoided mentioning Buddha in Buddhist-majority Ceylon. Did his sixth
sense tell him that the Tamils would not relish it? Is there a lesson
in this for those who quietly watched the recent killing of Tamils in
Shri Lanka, cheered President Mahinda Rajapaksa and are now conjuring
metaphysical similarities between Hinduism and Buddhism to coerce
Tamils to live under Sinhala hegemony?
Interestingly, soon after his return, Swami Vivekananda delivered
eight lectures to the Tamils of India. He mentioned Buddha only in
his lecture in Madras, where he said Buddhism was historically
responsible for India's degeneration. He had some kind words about
Buddha on reaching Kolkata, quite in sync with liberal Bengali mind.
There were other surprises in Swami Vivekananda's Ceylon speeches. He
occasionally referred to 'this holy motherland of ours' (meaning
India) to his Ceylonese Tamil audience, and stressed on deification
of India. His Tamil audience happily went along because mentally they
were all living in India, the Punyabhoomi (sacred land).
Therefore, if the late Velupillai Prabhakaran took inspiration from
the Mahabharat and Gita, and declared Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose
from Bengal as his icon, let us not be staggered.
