What is the medicine for stomach problems in Spain, " almagato ", known
as in English ?

These both sound similar. They're probably aluminum hydroxide gel. All
(most) antacids work via a combination of the drug with HCl, giving off
various, less volatile byproducts (CO2, NaCl, CaCl, H20, AlCl, etc.).

When last week I had stomache problems my doctor told me to have "Almax" (it
comes both in pills and as a gel). Maybe this is what you looked for?

In such a case you should ask for the ingredients of that medicine, if
possible, not for the brand-name.
I think it ist a combination of Aluminium and Magnesium (oxide/silicate?)
in Germany and USA : Maalox / Maaloxan / Almag.

Well, I wrote the product name without having it in hand. The composition of
Almax Forte is Almagato (DCI), Sorbitol, Calcium saccharine, excipient. So,
that is the Almagato.
By Almirall laboratories (address not printed).
